for those who may not know, afterburn is popping in the exhaust when the car is idling....I'm just curious how common of a problem this is

1Revvin7 12-09-2001 10:08 AM

I couldn't hear any even when i had straightpipes on. Rarely I hear it when my car has just started, very cold and i rev past 6500rpms. Is afterburn just when the car is idling? I though they were called backfires, and misfires. How can this be fixed?

Afterburn almost sounds like you're making popcorn in your exhaust when the car is at idle. Back fire is just one random loud POP.

Depends on how rich and advance timing my engine is running.

I had 2.5" straightpipe on my NA motor..it never did that..it would spit pretty blue/yellow flames when downshifting into 3rd @ 60MPH though https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Does the ALL DOING & KNOWING, haltech take care of afterburn?

The Haltech will pretty much make your car do whatever you want it to do...within reason. All of the quirks of the stock ECU, such as hot starting problems, will go away.

I seriously need to get one!

I seriously need to get one!
Buy my TEC II.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png The ignition on the TEC II is great. It even starts a flooded motor.

Electromotive makes the TEC II: http://www.getfuelinjected.com . It's a great system, but it's not really for beginners. My installation went fine, but I was lucky enough to get a defective one.:sigh: So I installed the Wolf 3D, and I don't feel like having any more down time with my car.

It's usually easier to find a tuner for the Haltech, and you should get good results. The TEC II can usually extract a little more power from the motor, but it may be tough for you to set up.

What about price comparison? And besides when it comes to electrical im pretty much a beginner.

The Haltech E6K is about $1400 with the MAP sensor and harness, and it uses the stock ignition. The fully terminated harness makes the installation a breeze. The TEC II is about $2400, but it includes a really great ignition system. You have to make your own harness for the TEC II. Both systems are pretty easy to wire up.

I have afterburn also. The other problem I seem to have is that when I am accelerating hard, let off and then hit the gas lightly, it backfires. Anyone have any suggestions??

AreExSeven 01-21-2002 11:43 PM

I've never had a problem with afterburn. I only have a RB exhaust on it though.

my GTU does the same. pretty normal. especially since you have a hiflow cat

90N/A Rex 01-22-2002 08:15 PM

Thanks Vosko. I almost started replacing all the gaskets for the exhaust. I would have been pissed if I did all that work for nothing.

vosko 01-22-2002 08:32 PM

anytime. my car has pacesetter headers going to bonez cat to unknown catback. i gets lots of popping. popping = running rich . running rich = good
