And you can bolt a long bar onto your flywheel to keep it from turning. |
most impact guns have nowhere near enough torque to move the flywheel nut. It must have taken 1000 ft/lbs to remove the one on me friend's car.
|
I used a big breaker bar (1 inch drive) and the slipped a steel pipe over the end so i got a 5 foot long wrench and it came off in a jiffy. In my opinion actually pulling off the flywheel was harder b/c it's a tappered seat. I borrowed my dad's friend's puller. It also made it come off real easy.

to get them off i have a long piece of angle iron to lock the flywheel. i use a breaker bar then put a long pipe over it and it gets it off. to actually pop the fuel off you can whack it with a piece of firewood. works like a charm https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

We have a HUGE impact gun from harbor freight. Had to hook up two 25 gallon compressors to get enough cfm to do it. One big one should work though. I usually only have problems with stock motors. Mazda used a ridicilus amount of torque on the flywheel nut. The remans are easier.

where do you get a socket wrench big enough for the bolt. its 2 1/8 right.

you need a thundergun/indycar/F1 car impact gun |
you just need to go somewhere that has 1" drive sockets.
napa has them, thats where I bought mine. Snap-on trucks have them too, I imagine they are available through sears/craftsman too. You'll need a 1'2" to 1" drive adapter to use it on what is likely a 1/2" drive on your rachet or impact gun. |
I used an impact wrench on the jspec, it came right off actually...I don't have a very large fancy impact wrench

After the nut is out, the nightmare is not over, u gotta remove the flywheel which is pressed in there too, so you need a puller to get that sucker out, that more of a pain too.

mallet

when i took mine off i used a torque multiplier i dont know how much it cost cause i borrowed it from a school
|
The Flywheel nut is a 54mm or 2 1/8" I took mine off with a 3/4 drive socket and a 1/2 drive impact... that was the easy part..
I then went to harbor freight and got a puller set... steering wheel puller type thing. I did have to go buy 2 new bolts to thread into the flywheel, and i made an extension for the puller out of 1/4 x 1 steel bar. bolt it all on the flywheel with a piece of copper (or aluminum) plate so that I didn't break the pilot bearing, and back to the impact for turning the puller, Id suggest not being directly under the flywheel, they are quite heavy and painful. Give it a little turn with the impact, and a rap with a deadblow hammer.. should just be a matter of time.. Remember this : The car WILL NOT win, You are smarter and have more tools. |
i have a bigger hammer. the 19mm on the front is harder

The 19mm bitch is the one that I cant get off........ <<< needs more tools
We impacted the bitch and didnt budge... gotta go find a STRONG torque bar as mine bows with the stress.... |
i would hope there is lift to get that impact GUN under
|
I removed mine with a impact gun from sears $85, 2 1/8 socket 3/4 drive, 3/4 to 1/2 adapter, 10 gallon aircompressor, and dead blow hammer. took a while waiting on the compressor. Once the bolt is loose leave it on but backed off a couple of threads. start swinging away with the dead blow around the flywheel, and one day like majic it pops loose. that is why it is important to have the nut on, saves your feet, floor and fly wheel teeth. good luck.

when my friend and I took it off, we tried with the adapter first (1/2" drive wrench->1/2" to 3/4" converter->2 1/8" socket), but we broke the driver off of the wrench, and it was a bitch to get the broken driver out of the converter. I couldn't believe it! We broke the mechanism in 2 other wrenches that day, but the craftsman wrench actually broke its driver. We had to borrow a 3/4" breaker bar and add a 4' cheater bar to get that thing off. It was pretty easy to get the actual flywheel off though.

when you go and put your new flywhele back on, do u need to do anything special to get the flywheel to sit correct on it's tappered seat?
