Just in the last couple days I have started to hear a loud metal on metal squeeling. It sounds like its coming from the front wheels. I am hoping its just brakes excepts that it seems to be throttle related. I only hear the noise when accelerating. If its in neutral and I rev the engine theres no noise, so I dont think its in the driveline. When I downshift to slow down I dont hear it either. Only when accelerating at low RPMs (<3500).

Cound it be the wheel bearings?

Or somethign worse?

I am going to change the brakes when my roomate gets home. What else should I check while Im in there?

Any chance the sound could be coming from the transmission/clutch?

Nope, turning doesnt affect it. Just putting the pedal down.

Well, I checked out the brakes and all 4 wheels still have at least 1/4" of pad left. What else could it be?

Im guessing tranny issues. Since it only happens under load. Wish I could help but I havent encountered this problem yet. (knocks on wood)

Well, I think Ive narrowed it down to the right rear wheel. How hard is it to change a wheel bearing?

Damn! Mazdatrix lists the rear wheel bearings at $74 each plus $10 for the seal. It only shows one part for all 86-92 though so maybe I can just swap out the bearings from my S5 parts car.

Scratch that. I dont think its a bearing anymore. I got it to make the noise while I was going slowly and it sounds more like something hitting, a fast tap-tap-tap that goes faster and slower as my speed changes, almost like the driveshaft is hitting the heat shield for the exhaust, except the driveshaft has plenty of clearance around it. I had someone spin the rear wheels while I was under it and I can hear a very faint scratching when the driveshaft turns. The noise still seems throttle related. Could this be something in the transmission or the differential?

Thnx

Andy

it could also be the shields on the brake rotors.

driveshaft i like cause the engine/trans moves around with the throttle, i fixed a wrecked gsl-se once and the motor mounts broke in the crash
