ok so my tach is doing the thing where it goes off and the check engine light comes on. when i check the codes it gives me the one where it says that the trailing coil isnt working right. that makes sense since that is what controls the tach. the car has also been running rough, like when i accelerate sometimes it feels like its missing and jumps a little. ok so tonight i was messing with it and while it was running i disconnected one of the spark plug wires and nothing happened. then i unhooked both of the wires and it didnt change the way it was running. to me this seems strange. whats up??

Most likely you've fried your coils. Just buy a good used set and replace them. I had a similar problem with mine a short time ago. FYI any set of trailing coils from any year FC will work.

speedometers are never very accurate. car and driver used to have (they might still) a speedo error thing on every roadtest and none of them are right. the one i remember was the police car the speedo was 10mph slow @60

Another thing worth considering is the ground wiring. I had a non-funtional tachometer for quite a while without knowing what the problem was or how to diagnose it. A converstation with a local rotary wizard revealed that the grounding for that system might be compromised somehow. So, based on his recommendation, I simply ran a wire from the trailing coil's mounting bracket to a bolt nearby on the firewall. It solved the problem completely. Now my tach is fully functional.

aftermarket rims and or tires can contribute to this

tires and rims are stock. ok now. i got the new one on there after i cleaned it up real nice like. ok so it works for a little and i can see the electricity coming from the coil when the wires are unplugged. then i rev it a little and the tach goes off and the light comes on. then i take the plug wires off and there is no spark. turn it off and start it back up and the thing is working again, then the tach goes off, light comes on, and the coil stops. whats causing this?? its like something is making the coil stop getting power. please help guys, i have to go to houston tomorrow and i really would rather not go on 2 plugs.
