what are my options. Got a brand new alt on there now, but it can't keep up with the heat, the lights and my stereo amps.

Anyone got any ideas?

Rob x-7 12-17-2003 03:54 PM

GM powermaster- ask Jim

FD alternator

or my choice: have your alternator rebuilt and upgraded by a local rebuilder and get a warranty to boot

phinsup 12-17-2003 03:57 PM

I can get the powermaster through one of my suppliers, how does it bolt up?

Rob x-7 12-17-2003 03:59 PM

I believe the only thing you have to do is buy the 2 wire pigtail

that fits it, which any auto parts store sells, then clock the alternator

so the bolt holes line up. Swap pulleys and I think your set.

Rob x-7 12-17-2003 04:00 PM

all told thats like a 1/2 hour worth of work.

phinsup 12-17-2003 04:01 PM

Bolts to existing mount huh?

That would be all right.

The FD alternator would probably be a better option than the GM alternator. That silverrotor guy on teamfc3s.org is selling them brand new for about $165 shipped. You can even get a dual pulley at no charge. He also gives you the required connector. A good S5 alternator would be another option. They put out a little more than the S4 alternators.

Yes, it bolts right in. It's too shiny with all of that chrome crap. I'm used to my dirty aluminum parts under the hood. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

The S5 is 80 A. The FD is supposed to be 100 A.

phinsup 12-17-2003 04:16 PM

the fd is 100 the fc is 60. Anyone know which powermasters alternator will bolt in?

twstdmtl 12-17-2003 04:19 PM

There is a guy in AL that builds 200 amp alternators with a guarantee. His name is Nathan Pericord or something. You can find him on ebay most of the time by searching for "200 amp alternator". Tell him what model your car is an he will get a quote back to you fairly quick. But chances are you don't need a 200 amp model he can still custom build for whatever your needs are.

And there is a forum member SILVEROTOR that sells alternators, but I have no experience with him. Goood luck https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif

EDIT: price is usually 200 +shipping

phinsup 12-17-2003 04:21 PM

Sweet, thanks, right now I am trying to figure out how the powermasters bolts up, I can get them at wholesale so that would be the ****.

Rob x-7 12-17-2003 04:25 PM

you dont HAVE to get the powermaster in chrome, you can get it

in plain finish

phinsup 12-17-2003 04:29 PM

Yea I can get plain black, but the ones I am looking at don't look like they will mount right up.

I still have the Powermaster, but I'm not using it right now. If you're interested in it PM me.

The Cosmo alternator is rated at 90 A. So it looks like Mazda kept upgrading every few years.

I swear. Everything on my car is dirty and dull.LOL

TheCamel 12-17-2003 08:35 PM

anybody have a pic of one of the GM units installed? I am very intrested in this option.

HIMNI RACING 12-18-2003 08:46 AM

Yeah, I would like to see one on the car.

I use a FD alt now. I get them at a good price. Factory rebuilt w/ 3 year warranty. $135 Comes with the stock FD pully and bolt.

I can look into getting more, if anybody needs them.

13BAce, what's the part # on that Power Master?

75 Repu 12-18-2003 11:08 AM

how many amps is the GM alternator? Hey phins once you figure out which one it is PM me.. I need one bad for the vert.. I have all the crap for a kick ass system now but I need the electrical juice to support it..

13BAce 12-18-2003 11:29 AM

It's 100 amps. I think this is the one I bought: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.a...art=PWM%2D27294 .

phinsup 12-18-2003 02:31 PM

that one bolts right up? It looks like a different design then the stock one.

My idea of bolting up may be different from the average person's. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png If I remember correctly, I bolted the thick mounting ear(far side) to the water pump and the thin one to the stock bracket. You'll need standard bolts to do it, unless you want to modify the bolt holes of the Powermaster.

Rob x-7 12-18-2003 03:49 PM

you can get a powermaster in 140amps as well for that extra bit

of juice

if I was only going to get the 100amp one I would just get a FD one I suppose.

j200pruf 12-18-2003 04:59 PM

Phinsup, I would just take it to a local alternator shop and have it rebuilt to put out more juice, and usually it will put out more than 100amps if you go this route.

phinsup 12-18-2003 06:27 PM

Hmm, wonder if I should pick up a used one on ebay and have it re-wound. My cost on the powermaster is $80, i am having issues picturing the mounting procedure though LOL I like to have **** figured out before i buy it if that makes any sense.

phinsup 12-18-2003 07:09 PM

Alternator shop said they can't boost the FC alternator. :(

The FD alt's are fuggin pricy.

Ok, take a drive out to my house and we'll do it. It should only cost you about $200 in gas. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif

Now Rob can't say I was lying.

Dramon_Killer 12-18-2003 10:50 PM

I have an FD alternator in my FC and let me tell you it gives my car plenty of juice. It's especially handy because I have a crappy Sears Diehard Gold battery and the previous owner took out the stereo. I can drive around at night with my lights on no problem.

err, sorry for the worthless post. I'm actually putting a system in this weekend, i'll let you know how ti goes.
