Hey guys, my names Matt from NC. Ive been in love with the rotary engine for a long time with my cars and friends cars i feel pretty comfortable with them. Ive decided to use a rotary engine in my next project, a bellytank lakester to compete at maxton and b,ville. Problem is i really dont know what im shooting for as far as overall speed. Does anyone have any info on the highest top speed of a NA rotary engine ever recorded. I know racing beat set the blown record with 24X??? mph in a turbo fd but im shooting for a NA goal if at all possible. Trying to become the worlds quickest NA 13b sounds kinda silly i know but with this chassis i think its obtainable. Ill post pics soon as the parts are coming in gradually. But im going to run a f15 600 gallon tank sectioned to make it smaller with a tube chassis, model A front axle and suspension and a quick change in the rear.

But like i said does anybody have info on the worlds quickest/fastest NA 13b.

i hope to have a great stay on here, thanks

-Matt

Welcome to nopistons!

I'm moving this to the 2nd gen section, you should get more answers there.

thanks bro

edit: if it goes well at first i might switch to some low comp rotors and go after racing beats record.

ha, no joking here, i mean where they did 240 in full chassis car, i could go just as fast with way way way less power on tap, considering the weight and aero of my project

hey matt, welcome to the forum, hope you like it. where are you located in nc? right now im at school in greenville, but usually i reside in sanford.

like baldy said, i'm sorta not sure whether you're joking or not, even when you say you don't. do you have any expertise in this area? (as in, aerodynamics) i say this because i don't think you would be focusing on the motor as much as aero. other than aero being the biggest drag (lol@pun), you're main factors are things like tire size, rear end/transmission ratios, and rpm. the only thing that the motor contributes is the max rpm, which is good in your case since you picked a rotary (easier, imho, to get and sustain higher rpm's).

so, to answer your question, while i don't have any details on the world's fastest rotary-powered vehicle, if you can get a 2/3/4-rotor and do a pp or something and get all the internals sound to rev to 11k+, with a long enough area there's no reason you can't be the new fastest.

ummmm....oh yea, forgot to mention, this project will cost a boatload if you didn't already know

thanks for the reply bro, but my calculations are as follows

if i can get the 13b to turn 8k which wont cost that much money that would be the only problem i see in the whole thing as far as motor goes. But as far as aero this design has much less drag than the fd than racing beat used. But yeah back to my numbers

with a 195/50/14 tire (27")

8k rpm engine

1.00 last gear in the tranny which a rx7 tranny has a .73 i belive

and a 2.70 to 1 gear in the rear puts my top speed capability at around 238 mph drag/power willing

so after that it becomes a power/ aero race

but when and if i get the go ahead to run on the big daddy course at b,ville (11 miles) a higher rear gear would be used and a push truck.

but as far as the aero goes ill just have to build it then modify , the formula for the aerodynamic horsepower loss in propelling a object with given coefficient of drag takes alot of factors that i wouldnt be able to guess untill the project is complete including , coefficient of drag, vehicle coefficient of frontal lift, etc.

so no im not kidding and i do have a little expertise in the area.

EDIT: as far as being the fastest rotary , if i attempt this goal it wouldnt be NA, id like to run the car NA first then switch to some power adder, probably forced induction as a 11 mile nitrous run would probably leave any engine in shambles

still searching online for some fast top speed rotarys, if anybody knows of any good links let me know.

I dont know if you were at sevenstock, but there was an FC done up to look like a police car. That was set up for top speed, NA. Was talking to the owner and he said it did 18X in 3rd with tranny broke so couldnt shift into 4th. Think it was Bonneville where he ran.
