not working!

I just bought a 1986 RX7 FC GXL it's such an awesome car it's got the looks and it turns like a kart but since 2 days ago the car started to hestitate at 3800RPM (we have a winner!!)

what's the ghettoest way to temporarily fix this? I almost spun out drifting just coz the motor cut out on me at that rev https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif I don't want to take that intake manifold apart is there anyway to hold the 6 ports open temporarily?

I did a search on this subject and I did a few tests of different kind on it:

1) the car will hestitate at over half throttle at 3800 RPM but it will run smooth if I feather the throttle, so the odd thing now is that if I floor it it goes slower than if I be light on the throttle. when I floor it I hear a hissing sound from the exhaust system at 3500revs or above. btw the whole car is stock.

2) the actuators don't move even if I do that solenoid bypass thing, and the car acts exactly the same with or without the solenoid - except now the car wants to stall when I coast. I returned the system back to the way it was and it became ok again.

3) the port shaft only rotates 10 degrees give or take when I turn it with a plier.

so what gives? My guess is carbon stuck ports but I really really don't want to take the intake apart as this is my daily driver but it really sux to limit myself to 3.5K revs that's like half of redline even a truck revs higher.

I was thinking maybe I can zip tie the ports open permanently?? but if the ports are stuck I don't think I can do that

or can I?

I had a friend with a same spec RX7 and he says when his car ceases to rev over 4K he took a sledge hammer to it and fixed it - where the hell can u hammer it to make the port work again?

and another thing that was on my mind is what if I take off the intake element and spray carb cleaner into the motor? Will that clear out the carbon stick?? Or is it really bad for a rotary engine???

I used to play a lot with piston engines before spraying carb cleaner into the engine had been standard procedure to clean up the intake track gunk does it hold true with the rotary motor???

someone help me out!! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

Take the lim off and pull the sleeves out. I did it to mine. You might loose some low end but oh well.

ok so lim = lower intake manifold (educated guess)

I can't do this without taking apart the thing?? man I really can't afford having this thing off the road.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...O_DIR#>/11.gif

1. sounds like the exhaust is plugged?

2. huh? theres no solenoid on the 86-88's

3. if they only turn 10 degrees its prolly way carboned up. gently keep at it, or pull the intake off and clean everything up

LIM = Lower Intake Manifold. The manifold is two halves

thanks for the help I pulled the "solenoid" (or what I think it was) that looks like 4 plugs on the driver's side of the car. I bypassed the first 2.

now after a lot of elbow grease I managed to turn the port handles all the way until it hits the stop plates (thank god for WD40) and disconnected them completely from the actuators

is the endplate position full-open? or should it be horizontal??? I tested out the car like so and the low end is slightly gone and high end I have just a little more room to put my foot down but if I do floor it it will still bog.

I'm guessing I turned the handles too much and has passed the sweet spot.

anyone knows where the outside facing handle should point at at full open 6 poty operation??

thanks a bunch I have a feeling I can make this bog go away tonight. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

ok guys more shizzle fo nizzle

after I tried the car a few rounds around the block and around the city, the cat got so hot it melted the plastic canvas I put on the ground for working on cars.

and the problem stays just the same. Then I inspected the exhaust the left exhaust gives a constant healthy flow of exhaust at idle while the right side barely puffed out anything.

and I have turned the 5th 6th port handle all the way to 12 oclock position because normally the handle sits at 9 o clock with the engine shut off I assumed that when the actuators moved it pulled in and make the sleeves sit at 6 oclock so it's only reasonable to think that at 12 oclock position the ports should be opened

now I think it's not at all related like that the ports are opened the hestitation is lessened but there is still hestitation and now this super hot cat and bad egg smell....

I think the exhaust system is fucked up good.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif what do u guys think? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif

j9fd3s 11-01-2005 07:24 PM

i think the exhaust is clogged. when the actuators are extended the ports are closed

Tessai 11-01-2005 08:03 PM

You've got a clogged cat!

Exhaust upgrade time! Have fun!
