I'm trying to buy an 1991 RX-7 Convertible, great shape and everything, just one small problem. After the gas pedal is halfway down, the engine starts to kind of die... It lunges back and forth. I'm told that it's probably because it's running lean, I'm not too familiar with cars, and the guy who told me that isn't familiar with rotary's.



I was wondering if anyone here had this kind of problem? It's been garage kept for a long time, has 126,000 miles. Unfortunately, taking it to the dealership is practically out of the question, as the price is pushing my limit already. If anyone has had this problem, are there any signs to look for that would tell me what the problem is? Thank you for any help.

 

It sounds like a throttle position sensor problem to me... these are known to either go out of adjustment or just flat-out fail.



Here is a link on how to check/adjust yours. It is specifically written for the 86-88 RX-7 but should work for your 91 as well.

 

is this while driving? or just sittting? if its while driving and above 3,800 rpm then its that damn dreaded 3800 rpm hesitation that everyone has... easy fix tho...

 

Make sure to check the compression before you buy it however.

I believe it happens while driving and sitting, next time I'm over there, I'm going to take a better look at it and write everything that happens down. I'm also going to see if I can check the compression, I'll post back with what I find.

 

I forgot, if it isnt the TPS, what else do you guys think it could be? I'm being told that it's probably the fuel injectors, but I'd like to have the opinions of people who actually stock RX-7's.

 

Oh, another thing I forgot, I dont know if this is redundant info or if it changes the whole situation all-together, but the check engine light is constantly on.

Yup, prolly TPS.



Now, another posibility is the airflow meter, located at the bottom of the airbox. If it isn't the TPS, try unpluging this and clean the plug off, they can get dirty. However, I doubt this is it.
