I am putting A/C back in my car. I gathered all the parts I need, I just need to install them. The only thing tricky is going to figure out how to get it to work with the haltech.
When I install the A/C, Ill take some pics and post them up on this thread. |
Yea I would imagine it would be a nice feature in CA, I know it would suck without it here.
|
he's in AZ now......wussy with AC!
|
I though it was Tucson? Man you move around a lot.
It sure wasn't any fun reconditioning the AC system in my car, but it is certainly worth it on those scorching hot days. Which refridgerant are you going to use? |
yeah.... im sayign **** mine... ill more than likely reinstall it

doesnt the haltech have a connection for to kick up the idle a bit for AC?
Im hoping the wolf I have will let me keep mine, I dont want to get rid of it, Ill take the additional weight over sweating like a pig anyday |
i'm doing the rebuild now, and keep or get rid of ac was a big decision for me. If it works i'll be glad to have it, and i'm in NY. I couldn't imagine not having a/c in soCal or Arizona.
|
Yah, its gets SUPER hot here. No way I can drive without A/C. Im actually going to do it right, use Aeroquip stainless steel hose and a/c fittings. Should look really really nice.
|
sit in traffic in a black leather seat with the top down in 90 degree heat and 90% humidity and tell me you dont need AC!

You wusses. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png
I don't own a vert - I don't care too much for them. I do own a coupe. I've been through 110F+ Sacramento summers. I've been through 120F+ Las Vegas summers. I've been through 90F+ and 90%+ Hawaii summers. I don't see what the big deal is. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png I grew up without AC, so I guess I don't find it a necessity... -Ted |
One of those creature comforts I guess, im just not fond of baking my brains out in the blistering heat. Even the mids 80's is fine in the vert, what bothers me are the 90+ days at 100% humidity... hot, wet air sucks! The car runs like **** as it is, there's no reason to sit there and be completely miserable too.

use r-12. wortht he money, alot colder
|
yeah use r12, r134 is a very expensive and hard to get right now. they stopped making it
yeah use r12, r134 is a very expensive and hard to get right now. they stopped making it
Other way around, R12 is very expensive, and you have to be a certified A/C guy to buy it. I think last time I did an A/C job it was $135 per pound, most cars need like 2 pounds. R134 is available ANYWHERE, you could probably even buy it at Albertsons. They make an additive for R134 that helps it get a LOT colder. My Toyota work truck blows 58 degrees on a 100 degree day https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif |
R134a, actually, this year quadrupled in price, they're preparing for the new release, either called 134b or i think R152. cant recall exactly. but R12 is the most expensive, R134a used to be like 1/5th of the price but as i said the price for 134a has quadrupled this summer....and thats wholesale cost, we double that and then sell to the consumer :P

my friend paid $75 a canister last summer, this year its $300 a canister

If you do some reasearch they make some pretty nice ac units for muscle cars that never came with it. All it is is a box that runs off a 12v source with some lines you plumb into the heater vents. There is no pump that runs off the motor and you cn use a relay and a dedicated circuit from you Hlatech to run it. Just a thought.

I heard there was a change over from R12 to R134 between '93 and '94. Does this mean that '93 Rx7s used R12 and '94s used R134?
|
If you guys are doing the A/C yourselves, make sure you're aware of the dangers - if you inhale that R134A stuff you will get lung cancer, and if somehow it was heated up it can kill you within hours.

lung cancer from one incident?

LOL. I was trying to find out some info on R134, and found this thread. Its hilarious. These guys are arguing over refridgerant!! hahaha
Not sure TBH but I'd rather not find out. I wouldn't underestimate it one way or the other - when it's heated it produces Phosgene which is a nerve gas https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/ohmy.png Mark |
I tried the R134 quick connect on my low side AC port. It didn't fit and freon shot out for a few seconds. That's the price payed to find out that my '94 Rx7 is an R12 system, which has a smaller fitting. Luckily my brother-in-law owns 5 lbs. of R12. I was under the impression that all '93s of all cars were R12 and all '94s were R134. According to the Pep Boys service manager, the change over from R12 to R134 AC systems was done during '93 to '95. So if your unsure what your A/C system is just check the size of the fitting on the low pressure side. R12 systems have the smaller fitting and R134s have a larger fitting. |
Check the R12 & Freeze-12 prices on e-bay
I saw some R12 at <$15 a can shipped.. I'm running "freeze 12". Nice & cold. I have to top up about 1 can per year. |
A/C is a must on the hot days like Rob mentioned.. i put the top up and crank the A/C
|
I have a question for you guys. My a/c system is completely dry. I have some cans of the "Freeze-12" my buddy bought. I know I have to add oil to the system, what is the mixture? And where the hell do you get the oil additive, and how do you add it??
Im thinking it may just be easier to bite the bullet and take it to an a/c speciality place and have them fill it for me. |
I would just get it done, you get the oil from a autoparts store, you measure it out in a container, drop a hose into it and attatch it to system, the system will suck the fluid in when its under pressure. Locally they get about $185 to do the conversion. |
