Im putting another motor in my gxl--86--what can be removed that i really dont need.--Like can the air pump be taken out--**** like that.

Swap in a T2 motor!

Look in the FAQ section, you can get rid of a ton of ****. Starting with the emmissions, PS, and A/C.

or you could switch to a webber carb setup, then your block would look like a peanut in a empty swimming pool.

do you need to pass a state enforced sniffer test regularly? If so it will put a limit on what can be removed, if not, most things can be omitted. The engine bay can be made relatively empty, how much money do you want to spend? Click on the latest pictures link in my sig for pics of a pretty empty NA engine bay.

no mean to hijack the thread, but besides less crap under the hood, what are the major advantages of carb over EFI?

IMO the only advantage carb gives you over programmable EFI is it's cheaper. My desire to drive my car across country through mountains and such when it's done alone ruins the carb idea since it would run like **** at the drastically different altitudes. EFI can compensate for the baro changes. Also the ability to tune fuel/ignition without leaving the car is pretty nice.
