Alright guys, I have found an 88 s4 just north of me for sale. The car has virtually no body rust, fairly stock...faded paint from sitting outside for awile. But the problem is, the motor was swapped out for a lower milage s4 motor (I think). The guy I'm getting it from said that the motor ran good in the donor car before it was removed, now he wants 1500 Canadian for it..and I'm trying to put together a list of possible reasons why it wont start, now I know you guys have lots of expierience with swaps etc..I would like some help putting together my list of reasons why it wont start before I go to look at it. Keep in mind, it was a swapped in motor from another NA S4 I'm pretty sure..help me add to my list...thanks.

List of Possible No Start Reasons:

1.Bad ground, ground strap not connected (Possible Locations?)

2.Not Timed correctly when swapped in (CAS issue, or bumped out of time?)

3.Clogged Fuel Lines/Filter?

4.Blown Fuses

5.Clogged Injectors

Now I know that if It doesnt have spark that is a timing issue, it should have good compression because it ran fine in the donor car....I'm positive the guy had gas in it when he tried to start it...I'm hoping hes that retarded and thats the case lol.

Anyway, help add to my list.

Oh and one more thing, how much will it cost for a normal average 150 000km rebuild?

150 000kms is 241 350 miles BTW.

it could be flooded and have a no start issue like it has no compression.

if it cranks over sort of fast and does not start it is probably flooded as well.

AFM not plugged in or loose, someone adjusting the TPS thinking its the idle, there are a ton of reasons for it not starting.

Give it the visual inspection first for obvious thing, check the firing order, etc.. then follow the procedure for flooded engine

Huh?

I seem to recall that there are approximately 1.6 kms per mile. That makes 150,000 km equal to about 94,000 miles. Methinks you applied the conversion factor the other way.

But yeah. Given that it's a swap, you've pretty much got to check everything. Fuel, fire, & air, as they say, and go from there.

No, I'm reading it right here on my math conversion sheet 1km=1.609 miles..I've got grade 12 math this year. Its the same thing as a kilogram converting to more pounds. But anyway, how much would it cost?

I'm also buying a parts FC with a bent frame, so I'll have a spare motor..and its got a rebuilt tranny that I'll probably put in my road worthy FC.

I'm no help on the topic at hand, but your math conversion sheet must be wrong. Kilometers are shorter than miles.

Not to get away from the topic, but Baldy is right. 1 kilometers = 0.621371192 miles. Just google "kilometers to miles" and you'll see the first 10 of 4.5 million web pages that agree.

Lol It was my bad I was reading it backwards...but no a km is not 0.62 miles...kms are bigger than miles just like kilograms are bigger than pounds..I even scanned the sheet, I don't really think the Canadian curriculum is wrong

But really enough about that, really how much would it cost for a 150 000km rebuild, or 93 000 miles/

cost of the build depends on whats wrong with the engine (if anything), how much and to what standard you want to replace, and any changes/mods

for example, if the engine runs fine, but is just old, to pull it apart, clean and measure things, and replacing the minimum (gaskets, springs, most likely side seals) is about 1000-1200usd, all the bearings and seals (corner, side apex, oil) you're suddenly in the 2000-2500usd range, if it needs rotor housings, those are 500 each. porting usually runs about 500, its all labor, so it varies. balancing, coatings, etc etc

so if it runs ok, leave it alone, and i'd pull apart one of your other engines to build, cause you might as well have fun driving the car if the motor is good
