It's just an accelerometer. It has nothing to do with the car. If you carried a 12V battery and ran around it could record YOUR 1/4 mile time.

you could use the suction cup to attach the gtech to your forehead

I'll strap it on top of my head with a 4 point harness.

it uses an axis and as soon as your car moves, the axis moves off the 0 degree mark and the clock starts ticking, Then it stops once you hit 60mph, it uses another thingy to tell it how fast your car is moving, like a cop w/ a radar gun. U can put in the weight of your car and then drive it and it will calcualte how much hp u have by how fast your car moves compared to how heavy it is, but i never used it for that i only used it for 0-60's and Q-mile( if i remember it does Q-miles) i returned mine though cuz it broke when i left it in the sun for 7 hours, even though they claimed the sun couldn't hurt it! i got refunded and bough parts for my car, its a fun toy though! When my car was stock w/ a 200lb friend i did 7.4 0-60's constently by feathering the clutch and gas @ idle.
