500 miles a week, good lord!

i say you did great with the car.

Rob x-7 12-09-2002 12:14 PM

Now is also not the time to be buying new cars with you needing a job soon I guess?

phinsup 12-09-2002 12:15 PM

I am not saying I haven't. I am just saying you get to a point where you gotta make a call whether to put the cash in it and have more into it then it's worth or you paid for it, or get something else. It has 165,000 miles on it.

I quite honestly would like to buy her something brand new with a warranty so I don't have to worry about it while she is going to school. It would be one less headache basically.

Well yes and now, I mean another few hundred a month isn't going to sink me LOL

I am paid here through June, then I have unemployment, or time to find a new job. If I get her a new car I can spend my car repairing time on the Jeep and the RX-7.

But it certainly isn't the BEST time to be looking at new cars.

j9fd3s 12-09-2002 12:19 PM

that gsl-se is probably the best car you can buy.

Like I say price per mile it has been cheap as hell, but now I am at decision time, dump some serious cash in a high mile car or start looking for a new one. At least if I buy something new I am dishing out cash in small handfulls each month LOL

Rob x-7 12-09-2002 12:23 PM

I dont know your price range, but the Galants are really nice, a Protege', all for under $20,000, even the base model Mazda6.

A couple bucks down and your payment should be about $325-350 or so. Factor insurance if its an issue in your area.

I dont think a lease would be good for you guys with the mileage you put on the car.

But maybe the time has come to get her a new car before you know it another $1000 might go into the 84

phinsup 12-09-2002 12:26 PM

Yea lease won't work with as much as she's driving. I have her looking at the 6, she really wants a new Mini Cooper, which is in our price range as well. I showed her the Lancer and the Galant and she was not impressed LOL, so those are out of the question.

She like the Mazdaspeed protege, but not the regular one, she wants the turbo if she gets one LOL

We were thinking a little truck, ranger or Dakota would be useful, but holy **** have you seen the sticker prices on those bastards? They run like 25K with a decent motor in them and who the hell wants to buy a truck with a tiny 4 cylinder, kind of defeats the purpose, then of course you get into the gas milage issue, she needs something that gets some decent 25 plus miles to the gallon.

i see where you are coming from, but a new car is a loose loose situation. so you buy a bmw 750il for $100,000, the second you drive it off the lot its worth 70k a year from now its worth 50k, when the car gets to be 6 years old its worth under 10k, i can find a much better use for my "100k" than that

mike

vosko 12-09-2002 12:34 PM

there is a reason i bought the truck :bigthumg:

phinsup 12-09-2002 12:36 PM

Well I am not going to be buying a 100K car LOL. The way a look at it is, it's a depreciating purchase, but you gotta have something to drive, you buy something old, you put money into it to keep it in shape on a regular basis, you buy something new, that money goes to the depreciation of the car, but at least my white ass isn't laying on the garage floor fixing it, you gotta calculate your labor in their somewhere.

Having an 84 GSL-SE with $5,000 worth of parts and $5,000 of my own time is a pretty fucked investment too, it's only gonna sell for 1K https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

Yea I just want something with a warranty and road side assistance and what not, piece of mind, I mean she works from 7:00 AM to 4:30 and goes to school an hour from our house from 6:00 to 10:30. I don't want her sitting on the side of the road at 11:00 at night.

vosko 12-09-2002 12:45 PM

get her a saturn or a hyundai. they cost what $10k new ??? lol

phinsup 12-09-2002 12:47 PM

She won't drive a Saturn or a Hyundai, it's hard enough for me to talk her into selling the RX-7, she loves that car.

Exactly my thoughts.

Finally a person who also counts the labor that goes into something!

All these guys and thier "I can build one hell of a FC for $20,000", thats not the point!

phinsup 12-09-2002 01:02 PM

My time is the most important thing I have and I have control over how I spend it. That's the way I have always been, I do enjoy working on cars, to an extent, but when it becomes a drag and/or much like in this case I am getting close to dumping way too much of my time and money into a car that I will be unable to recover any of it from I tend to take a look at things. I don't want to be sitting here in 6 months going, damn wish I would have put 5K into a new car instead of the 84 cause I have spent every weekend for the last month working on the mother fucker.

Like I say, not going to get rid of my 10th AE under any circumstances, but my Jeep has a new motor, new tranny, new front end, etc, etc.... I will be able to keep it running with minimal effort and work on the white car when I feel like it. Now take the wifes car, it breaks, I HAVE to have it fixed because she needs to get to work and to school, if the thing breaks down on her at 11 at night there she is on the side of the road with no where to go and if she is close to school it could take me 45 minutes to an hour to get there.

j9fd3s 12-09-2002 01:03 PM

so what if my fc did cost $27,000 with labor!

mike

phinsup 12-09-2002 01:05 PM

Well you are probably happy with it, but what if you had an 84 GSL-SE with a dented up body, crappy interior and it cost you 27K? LOL

j9fd3s 12-09-2002 01:11 PM

yeah but for 27k i could have 2 fully restored gsl-se's and money left over for insurance

mike

vosko 12-09-2002 01:15 PM

yeah just get the wife a new car https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

phinsup 12-09-2002 01:16 PM

LOL

And if you went to sell them both you would get a whopping $6000 if you were lucky, not to mention the loss of your own time that went into it.

There comes a time in your life when working on your car isnt as enjoyable as it once seemed, mainly because you find much more fullfilling things to do with your time.

Putting alot of time and money into a car that isnt worth anything just so you can use it for transportation is far from enjoyable.

phinsup 12-09-2002 01:23 PM

Yea like sitting on the couch all day sunday in your underwear with the wife watching old movies and drinking coffee.... as opposed too laying in a puddle of gear oil on an ice cold concrete garage full with a wrench in your hand and dirt in your eyes.

Is that what you were referring too LOL

j9fd3s 12-09-2002 01:31 PM

i went to mazda yesterday to check out some cars. the mazda6 is a great car. i test drove the sport edition, handles very well and has some pickup, test drove an mpv and almost got it for the wife. i would go for the minicooper, i dont think those cars will lose much value

ILUVMY88CABRIO 12-09-2002 02:59 PM

If you need to, we could swap **** off my car and see if anything gets better.

Rob x-7 12-09-2002 03:00 PM

The MPV is a nice van if you need it, especially with the 2 kids, has 215 hp or some **** right?

Did you drive the V-6 Mazda6?

That might be best, I cant believe you swapped all that **** to get rid of this noise, that sucks, more I do think about it you probably do have a broken mount somewhere.

phinsup 12-09-2002 03:01 PM

I may have to, I am going to have my Dad take a look tonight see what he thinks, then I am going to go from there.

That's what I am thinking too, well the tranny wasn't a total loss cause the input shaft bearing was making noise, so that did go away, but the major issue is still present, I am thinking I will get under there and take a look at the tranny mounts, see what's up there, if not it has to be driveline or rear end.

Rob x-7 12-09-2002 03:03 PM

maybe see if you can block the front/back wheels, set the parking brake, and even hold the brake with your foot while you give it gas in gear, im sure if its a mount youll see the culprit moving around a bit too much and maybe even some contact with another component somewhere.

Turbo II 12-09-2002 03:03 PM

yeah i drove the v6 mazda6 with the sequential tranny. real nice car. wish i got approved for that car rather than the van. the mp6 is a 200hp v6 with dual sliding doors and a whole lotta extras that makes me wanna get it but they wanted 7000 grand down. im holding out another year before i go back to look at minivans. but thta mpv is gonna be the one
