Every time it gets kinda cold here my car gets pretty much frozen shut. The passenger door lock will usually unlock easily and you have to be careful when opening the door because the rubber seals get stuck together. The driver side door lock will not turn and often the key will not go in all the way. Does this ever happen to anybody else? My friends cars are from the same time frame and their cars open just fine.

Happy Holidays

Thanks,

kevin

whenever my drivers door lock gets wet you have to play with it for a while to get it to turn

that's what a garage is for

Baldy 12-23-2004 01:08 PM

could you put something on the rubber seals to keep them from sticking, like armor all or vaseline or pam non-stick cooking spray?

I agree, a petrolium based tire dressing on the rubber seals will help.

A cup of warm water always works to unfreeze my locks too. If you don't have warm water you could always pee on the lock too, I suppose. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683785.gif

My locks freeze on my 88, it can be a pain to get it open. Using a lighter to heat up the key works good. Be careful when pulling up on the handle I managed to break part of mine off so it would flex enough not to pop the door open.

I've tried playing around with the lock but it really gets frozen good, my passenger side is very easy usually, that's what i want to figure out, and it's not a good idea to put hot water on a forzen car....you can crack your windows and plus hot water freezes faster than cold water.

Spray wd-40 into the lock after you shoot it with lock de-icer. Lock de-icer is hydrophillic, it attracts water and will cause the sliders and pins inside the lock cylinder to corrode, making 10 times more likey to stick. Use armorall, or silicone spray on your seals, if you dont have any put a little bit of used motor oil on a rag and wipe it down (ghetto, but it works)

oh, and dont mind bigturbo74 AKA bighomo74, he's a prick and one of many reasons why i cant stand here anymore

Rob x-7 12-23-2004 09:36 PM

one should use lock lubricant if they can find it, it contains graphite and is the best for locks

wd40 also works and is usually handy though

not really, you know.

Rob x-7 12-24-2004 12:54 PM

I washed alot of cars when it was just about freezing out, I can tell you that hot water gives you more of a chance then cold water does, that and leaving the car running with the heat blasting, lol

if your water is starting out hot it gives you that much more time before it reaches freezing.

HAHAHA....great topic, this **** happened to my car for the very first time the other night and I wondered the same thing.

My car sure is squeaky and annoying in the cold.

What they mean is hot water cools at a faster rate.

Of course it still takes longer to freeze, and gives off more heat energy during that time.

porsche4786 12-28-2004 12:51 PM

First of all http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physic...hot_water.html for you idiots that didn't graduate high school check that link out. Second of all putting hot water on a frozen car will crack the glass and could damage the paint. Heat up a glass and throw cold water on it, or freeze a glass and put hot water on it! Have fun!
