When I start the car up and let it warm up the exhaust almost seems to backfire every 5-10 seconds, like a small pop. Once the cars warms up then I don't have this problem anymoer its just when its cold. I dont think that its normal. So any ideas on whats wrong?

Mine does the same thing, but so did my brand new motorcycle, so I figured it was normal...as long as it went away when it got warmed up. I would like to know, if someone else know otherwise.

mine started doing this after it started burning alot of oil, and it would blow smoke rings out the exhaust every time that mild pop happened... I'm not sure what caused it but I suspect it was my plugs getting fouled from the oil and misfiring every now and then.

its a misfire, its normal for a rotary to do that at idle

I'm not sure how normal it is, I've seen a few built 7's idle smooth as butter without any misses...

I'm inclined to agree, although I'm sure there are rotaries out there that don't do it. The exhaust of a rotary, particularly before it's warmed up, is extremely rich with unburned fuel. It's hard not to imagine it popping some before it warms up.

I have the same problem, once it warms up it's fine, so I don't think it's anything to worry about. As long as it doesn't backfire hard it's probably fine.

remember that these motors are 2 strokes....listen to a weedwacker or a chainsaw at idle when its cold...it does the same thing..a turbo motor does not do it....for reasons i dont know why

i notice my 1st gen idles better with less timing split. in the book "rotary engine" they go into detail, its a wierd phenomenon, where it will actually miss 3 times on a row

turbo's have a cleaner exhaust than N/A quieter too!

some slight backfiring is normal..... if nothing else it can sound like shotgun blasts which are cool in my book https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png
