When I start the car up and let it warm up the exhaust almost seems to backfire every 5-10 seconds, like a small pop. Once the cars warms up then I don't have this problem anymoer its just when its cold. I dont think that its normal. So any ideas on whats wrong?

Baldy 01-24-2003 02:26 PM

Mine does the same thing, but so did my brand new motorcycle, so I figured it was normal...as long as it went away when it got warmed up. I would like to know, if someone else know otherwise.

pengaru 01-24-2003 02:53 PM

mine started doing this after it started burning alot of oil, and it would blow smoke rings out the exhaust every time that mild pop happened... I'm not sure what caused it but I suspect it was my plugs getting fouled from the oil and misfiring every now and then.

its a misfire, its normal for a rotary to do that at idle

I'm not sure how normal it is, I've seen a few built 7's idle smooth as butter without any misses...

I'm inclined to agree, although I'm sure there are rotaries out there that don't do it. The exhaust of a rotary, particularly before it's warmed up, is extremely rich with unburned fuel. It's hard not to imagine it popping some before it warms up.

I have the same problem, once it warms up it's fine, so I don't think it's anything to worry about. As long as it doesn't backfire hard it's probably fine.

Apex13B 01-24-2003 07:56 PM

remember that these motors are 2 strokes....listen to a weedwacker or a chainsaw at idle when its cold...it does the same thing..a turbo motor does not do it....for reasons i dont know why

i notice my 1st gen idles better with less timing split. in the book "rotary engine" they go into detail, its a wierd phenomenon, where it will actually miss 3 times on a row

turbo's have a cleaner exhaust than N/A quieter too!

some slight backfiring is normal..... if nothing else it can sound like shotgun blasts which are cool in my book https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

The rotary is actually a "four-stroke" engine. Each rotor face experiences distinct intake, compression, ignition, and exhaust phases. I always wonder why people think of the rotary as a two-stroke design. Only thing I can think of is the oil injection, and the lack of a valve train.

I would just have to say it's the nature of the beast :smirk:

1987rx7guy 01-25-2003 02:38 PM

Mine back fires also nothing wrong with it. Even when it is warmedup you might still hear one backfire every now and then but like the above persons have stated it is normal and the rotary engine is 4 stroke not 2. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/boink.gif

I know its normal. My 12a and 13bs did it all the time. And with no cats you get a cannon blast when its warmed up nicely and you shut it off.A 3 foot flame when you turn the car off makes people jump high. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

fcrotornut 01-25-2003 03:01 PM

ah yes ,the flames, ive seen a friends fd do that once, it was the most amazing thing ive ever seen, i was behind the car when it happened, i think i lost some leg hair to it though https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

I really wish you would do more research before your posts.

http://www.rotaryengineillustrated.com/RE1...hecycle101.html

rotary, 4 'stroke', intake, compression, combustion/power, exhaust. 4. count them.

not 2 cycles doing things in parallel per 'combustion chamber', like a 2 stroke:

the crankcase is not pressurised in a rotary engine during the exhaust 'stroke' then turned into a vacuum to draw in air/fuel for the next pressurization. They are quite different, though similar in concept (2 strokes are relatively valve-less other than the reed valve, which not all have anyways)

the rotary engine is not a 2 stroke, write it on the chalkboard 100 times.

i wish i had a good scanner, i could post pages out of the little silver book....

RotorBalls 01-26-2003 12:23 PM

damn you guys are harsh...he was probably trying to say that it was like a two stroke https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/dunno.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

1988RedT2 01-27-2003 03:02 PM

I just don't like my Mazda rotary jewel being compared to a weed-whacker or a chain saw. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Apex13B 01-27-2003 07:15 PM

im sorry for trying to ******* think..thanks for making me look like an *******

all you needed to say was...

Apex i believe you are wrong a rotary has...blah blah blah

Apex13B 01-27-2003 07:15 PM

btw i dont have time to do "research"

i work 3 jobs...have no heat and my kid got taken away today cuz i cant afford to feed her and keep her warm. how the **** do i have time to write a paper on a motor...or what ever research is..i'm sorry if I offended your high intellect..i was just making a correlation between oil consumption..of a 2stroke "boinger" and a rotary...no valves..timed ports...sorry if i failed thermodynamics in college..

Apex13B 01-27-2003 07:32 PM

i love you guys https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/blackeye.gif after you punch me in my mouth

1988RedT2 01-27-2003 08:00 PM

Apex, I don't believe anyone here bears you any malice, and I'm damn sure we all are bummed as hell to hear about your kid being taken away. The bad thing about forums and chat rooms, is you can't hear the speaker speak. The lack of important auditory cues like vocal inflections and laughter can make a good-natured ribbing sound like a verbal assault. From time to time I feel like I've been jumped on, but I know we're all just ******* around, so please don't take it personally, or I'll come over there and rip off your head and **** down your neck! https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Aw shucks! I hate this mushy stuff! Let's all just get along, okay?

Apex13B 01-27-2003 08:06 PM

that is what the "i love you guys" post was for
