Anyone know what kind of effects ethanol in gas (12-80%) has on engine wear, power, emissions, etc.? :eh:

 

Isn't ethanol the "good" type of alcohol, found in beers, spirits etc?

(by good i mean, your body can handle it... won't kill u as fast as other types)

Mazda did not recommend ethanol for rotary engines...dries out seals.....not good for apex seals and such.... :notify:

 

Perhaps it isn't good for rotaries; they are certainly a unique case. There is a lot of disinformation on ethanol as a whole, though. It is an octane booster, perhaps even higher than the printed octane rating functionally because its knock resistance degrades less under load than gasoline. It could be hard on apex seals, but if adding oil works like many already do with gasoline, than it would actually improve longevity because it burns cooler.

It's not good alcohol, though. It's denatured so you can't drink it.

 

Denatured is a name given to ethanol, which is drinkable, that has been mixed with methanol, or wood alcohol(which is poisonous) to make it undrinkable. This is done to avoid the liquor taxes on ethanol.

 

Technically using a premix of ethanol/oil fix the dried up seals problem or not XD
