Hey i just got an n/a FC project car and it has been sat for two years until i bought it. I just started i up today and it runs fine other than puking out a **** load of smoke until it warmed up! Only issue motor wise so far is that when i try to rev it up it hits 4grand and then cuts out back to idle. When i say it cuts out it doesnt actually shut off it just stops and the rpms drop until i take my foot off the gas and re apply it.
Any ideas what it could be? TPS buggered? And as an FYI it wont n/a for long! Just need to get it running and have it as a secondary run around car until i build up a bt! Thanks in advance! |
umm. kinda sounds like it's going into limp mode check to see if the omp if functioning properly. otherwise if it's smoking on start up could be the tps if you have a s5 b/c one of the tps control the oil injection i think this is corroct some one correct me if i'm wrong.

Did you mean to say, send the engine to Australia? Ill sell you the engine, trans and ecu for cheap. It runs, just hesitates at 3800rpm |

its an 86 gxl n/a. All it does at the moment is get to around 3800 and then drop right off back to idle. I noticed in the other post you said it could be in limp mode? The other guy at the beginning of the thread mentioned that also. Im not getting an engine light though so i dont know if its throwing any codes at all. Going to check the warning lights and make sure they're all working first! Im assuming limp mode would be a safe mode for the car? What causes this usually? Thanks in advance |
I'm pretty sure limp mode only accures on series 5 vehicals that develops a problem with the electrical omp system. I'd check if your timing is correct and tps and throttle settings are in proper specs.

When you say to check if the TPS and throttle setup are within spec. What do i reference those against? I can check timing but not too familiar on how to troubleshoot the TPS and throttle setup nor how to figure out what the correct setup is for them.
Thank you |

you can look it up in the service manual and ohm it out or do this

Haha thanks for the help dude! Ill give this a shot. I just wanna get it going with not a whole lot of money and time as mentioned before. Saving that money for the swap primarily. I might even pick up an OBD1 reader if i cant figure out the home made code reader, could be useful in the future as im sure the swap probably wont go over too smoothly!
You sure you dont want to buy it? lol |
our cars are pre odb so you have no luck with one of those. also try to avoid the ohm test there a link around here how to make a check light out of leds i just had a problem checking my tps with the ohm test bc taking resistance of a 20y/o part doesnt work too well all my ohm readings were correct and the tps was still fucked
