an auto drive shaft does bolt up BUTTTT it is TOO SHORT!!, with out any spacer it splines into the trany about half an inch which is too risky to drive around the block even.....

i fabed a 1" spacer for the rear of the driveline and, that got the car moving at least.

it was very poorly balanced and would vibrate pretty decently at above 40 mph... i sold the car telling the new owner to buy a real driveshaft, cuase that one will break.... he has been driving it daily about 6 months now with out any problems belive it or not.

just use the auto shaft.. locate one with car-part.com.. works great by the way.. and have it extended an 1 1/4-1/2 at any macheine shop my friend had an one extended, 50 bucks.. my shaft was 75 bucks... i would say no to spacing the rear only for the fact that if its not perfect it will wobble and junk, whatever is cheaper i gues..

Rob x-7 02-24-2006 05:58 AM

you need to get it balanced after its extended otherwise its the same crap as putting a spacer. $50 to extend and balance a driveshaft sounds really cheap

I don't get it. You guys want to modify your cars, and your taking the easy/not so great way out. There are T2 rear ends and axles for sale everywhere. People on the forums, ebay, junk yards(your allowed to order it from a junk yard in another state and have it shipped). It just makes me sad that you would half-ass a conversion. If your just putting the T2 tranny into the car and it's going to remain NA, then sure..get the shaft from Mazdatrix ...at least it would be balanced. If your going T2 and looking for a cheap swap, then your nuts...just put the t2 rear in there! This whole extending an automatic driveshaft is crap if you don't rebalance it. This is why no manufacturers take the time to make parts for the FC owners...nobody is willing to pay to do things right...

BTW, I'll have an '87 mechanical T2 LSD and stock axles for sale this spring... just as a heads up.

well in my defence i bought the car with no drive shaft, with t2 swap with t2 trany and a na rear diff, i fixed thee car just to get it to move under its own power, and sold it for profit, and i TOLD the new owner before i sold it to him , you either need a balanced driveshaft or a t2 rear and driveline.. and he is dumb and drives it anyway....

if it was a car i planed to keep or did it my self, id recommend getting a professionally balanced driveline or using the t2 rear end and driveline.

i don't think your 'defence' stands up too well when that guy is driving down the freeway and the shaft breaks and kills him and other people on the road. i don't recommend people doing or trying to custom make anything without professional experience or supervision. there is no point to make a car drive and be dangerous to save literally 50 bucks than to make it right...
