after i pass smog, i wanna get rid of my cats (getting old and rusting out).....im not gonna pay $400 to change them knowing that a ticket would end cheaper...so i wanna go with a downpipe and a presilencer. i'm gonna keep my cat back for now, factory i believe, but will end up changing soon. i need a dp and ps that would bolt-on and isnt too expensive. what are my choices....i looked at RB, corksport and other stores and they all seem expensive....should i get a custom one? how easy is it to build one? i have all the necessery tools and welders and what not....what kinda metal should i use? 2", 2 1/2 or 3"? can i build a pre silencer too?

You can use a Borla XR-1 muffler as a presilencer. 2 1/2" is big enough. 3" will be too big, unless you have a bridgeport or something. You may want to go with a header instead of a downpipe.

Just get some racing beat headers that collect to one and you can build a test pipe for the rest and/or use the xr-1 as a silencer after the headers like 13bace recommended.

If you want to go deaf and hate other humans you could always run the header with just a pipe and a resonator...no mufflers.
