Ok i finnally got around to getting under my vert yesterday and checking everything out. i was looking around under there and looked up to look at the tranny and noticed all this: Is this normal? It looks to me like some one used some silicone sealer or something to try and seal it up. I ran my finger acoss the sealer stuff and it is leaking fluid pretty bad. Im driving the car tommorow to my grandparents so i can put it on jack stands and actually do some work. Its a PITA to use the jack that came with the car to go under it.

The silcone sealant is normal, but the laeking fluid is not. I recomend having it rebuilt or resealed.

jus looks like some rtv sealent. (quick gasket) this is known to be good between scarred edges and gaskets. by itself i believe its weak. you can try to tighten the bolts, but be careful not to over-do it and start worse leak. if ya want it done right (no leak), your gonna have to put some fresh gaskets. :rice:

Actually I've seen RTV that comes in that color. I have a friend who lives by that stuff. The good thing for him is that it hasn't failed on him yet.

if theres nothing wrong with the tranny (shfits ok, no bearing noise etc) you can pull it out and pull there rear housing off and re goop it.

i would try tightening the bolts first though

Tighten the bolts, but not too much, then leave it alone until something breaks, its probably been like that for a while and a little leak never killed anyone. Just keep an eye on the fluid and you should be fine for a while. I would think if leaked that much you would have noticed the mess under the car where you park it.

Also make sure it isnt motor oil thats leaking from either the rear seal or the o-rings under the oil filter. Didnt you say you cleaned the side of the engine where the plugs were because it was oily? Oil leaking from there will find its way under the car. Buy a can of brake cleaner, maybe 2 cans, and when you go under the car spray it all up and the brake cleaner will clean the area quite nicely, then check back in a few days and see whats up. You may want to put a piece of cardboard down so you dont make a mess of your grampappy's driveway
