i was woundering how many of your tranies get really hot or between the seats gets hot. my 88 does not get hot at all but my friends 86 gets really hot and can be used as a hand warmer kinda handy.

phinsup 05-08-2005 01:10 AM

My GSL-SE was like that, it was rediculous how hot the tranny got, and that was with two separate tranny's.

fc3s4utnv 05-08-2005 01:14 AM

Mine gets pretty hot too.

fc3sboy1 05-08-2005 01:22 AM

interesting topic. are you sure its not the exhaust making that heat since it runs rather tight to the trans. my fc had a hot trans tunnel only when the turbo was glowing orange.,,,,,,,,, just a thought

ryderx 05-08-2005 11:43 AM

im not sure whats causing it i just though it would be the tranie because its right there

\my brothers 88 Se get so hot you dont need the heat on in the winter. SO i never trully understood why some trannys get really hot and others dont.

Is it tranny overheating?

fc3sboy1 05-08-2005 12:02 PM

change to a full synthetic gear oil , i prefurr mobil 1 80/90. that might help.

ryderx 05-08-2005 12:04 PM

hey there can be a connection. I have a GXL and no tranny overheating lol, bro got a SE gets hot like FIRE..

drftk1d 05-08-2005 02:07 PM

think it has to do with shifter insulation. my friends FD does it too.

there was a thread like this a couple months ago.

phinsup 05-08-2005 02:09 PM

my 83 GSL didnt do it, 84 GSL-SE did, 89 vert didn't, 88 AE doesn't, 88 vert doesn't.

cdaleracer669 05-08-2005 03:51 PM

my exhaust leak is right there under that, plus the metal the short throw shifter is made out of culd let it get hotter. and my tranny boot, the ones down in there, it is missing one of them and the other isnt attached or nething, plus my shift boot isnt in there, if my boot is down there it isnt blowin hot.

nightwolf_4_98 05-08-2005 04:18 PM

the 90 vert i had got hot there too, nice hand warmer https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png

The whole hump in the floor for the tranny gets hot its an 89gtu. It only does it in the summer this may be from an exhaust leak.

slimeball 05-09-2005 12:17 PM

ok a cold tranny is good becuse that means the power handing of it increses so dont worry about ti not getting hot this is a better than not thing

banzaitoyota 05-09-2005 06:10 PM

Most of the heat is because some DUFUS removed the factory heat shielding to save the 3 lbs it weighs. GEt under the car, look for the heat shielding, check the condition of the shifter boots and insulation, get your exhaust leaks fixed

the exaust caused it on my 90 Vert... When we built the custom exaust setup it didn't get hot anymore...
