i decided im gonna get a rx7 with a blown engine, then drop a j-spec or rebuilt. i was planning on getting a 89-91 TII as they have more hp than the earlier modles of the 2nd generation. but if im gonna drop another engine into it, are there any complications on dropping a 89-91 TII engine into a 87+, becasue those are so much cheaper and easier to find. does everything match up and what are the differences between the modles?

You'll have to switch the front cover and oil metering pump to the 87-88 style because on 89-91 cars the pump is computer controlled. On 87's it's mechanically controlled. You'll also need to use the 87-88 sensors.

You can buy engines that are already ported and modded from Mazdatrix.com. Or used jspec engines from Corksport.com, or FC3S.org.

A motor from a Japanese car.

vosko 05-14-2002 01:08 PM

typically jspec refers to an engine out of a car from japan that is used and shipped over here to the USA https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/wink.png

what's better about a jspec engine? i mean, if my engine went out, couldn't i just rebuild it my self, port it using a kit and save some money?

It's the same as the U.S. motor. People usually say that they have 30 K miles or less, but it's hard to tell when you have a motor with no car.

Jspecs save you time and sometimes money, not in my case though :(

Also, according to Mazda, the Japanese Rx7s had 207HP in 1991...but I believe it had to do w/ emissions or something....

Cone intake? Heck I added 10hp alone with my Rotary Engine sticker and some yellow electrical tape!

:baaaa:

Jspec engines are better because in Japan they dont have emishon tests like u americans. so get rid of the cats and **** and all the little emishons thingys and bang! more HP

it would be great if that post made any sense. the jspec doesn't have SMOG but they do have a cat still. a jspec won't pass US EMISSIONS testing. if do get a full exhaust you will need a FCD and upgraded fuel pump to have enough fuel....

The Blue Bomber 05-18-2002 12:00 AM

what about a cosmo?

do they bolt in in place of a 13b

i think they are the same size

i wonder what you would need for the conversion?

manifold ecu fuel pump etc...

vosko 05-18-2002 12:24 AM

if you want a cosmo you need custom k2rd motor mounts then need custom ems, etc :(

You can run premix and not worry about changing the front cover.

I recently broke my 88 engine and had to buy a 89+ jpec because of the cost, availability and ease of swap.

So far I'm very happy with my s5 engine, it feel much stronger and smoother than my s4 engine. I didn't bother swapping out the turbo with the upgrade one i had. The turbo it came with had no shaft play. I didn't bother changing the front cover to go mechanical OMP. there was no oil leaks coming frm the front cover area so I better not play with it because is not broken and run premix.
