Daily Driver For A High School Senoir?

I know everyone hates this posts, but if you are willing to help, I love you.



Well here's the deal, I don't have the car yet, and I've been here for hours reading articles and such, soaking up all I can.



I've got a budget of about 6 or 7 grand from my parents and I've found a 100k mile FC for about 3k.



I just want the car to be running reliably, I know its a old car, but I can't really risk being late to school.



I DO UNDERSTAND THAT THIS CAR IS HIGH MAINTENANCE



What I'm asking is that is it feasible for a motivated person such as I, to be even in the running to purchase a beast like this.



I have many friends who are also into cars, so they could help a bit. My best friend's uncle also owns a Shop, so maybe I would be able to source Mazda OEM parts at cost.



Foremost, my dad is a 25 plus years aircraft machanic, you tell him how to do something.. he'll do it. Problem being he doesn't know it all, so I'll be doing a lot of reading for us, and he'll also be teaching the ends of how the car works.



This would be my first car.



I'm not a horsepower monster or even a street racer. I just hope I can get this beatiful car up and running reliably.



I'm all for the N/A versions... Not really a power hog right now, and I don't want to kill my parents with insurance.

Thats the car I'm going to look at this weekend ( I hope no one swipes it from me) Doesn't really say much other than it has 111k miles.



Those FAQs are a godsend and a extra special thank you to whoever wrote the "how to buy a FC" faq.



My dad was in the military so he'll get on my *** if I don't keep my car in shape (Which I promise to do anyhow)



I'm not going to be a fool and rush into this car, I've spent over a year looking for a used car. I've looked at mr2's, intergras, 240sx, and driven countless miles to see them. (I live in southern California... you would think that more cars are for sale.)





I Definately, defeinately want to get a job... But I'm trying to join the wrestling team this seaon, and thats going to take up all my time for this semister, next semister I hope to join ROP, which will then land me in a decent paying job.

Go for it, you seem to be WELL more farth off than half the people here w/ n/as. Oh and n/a fc's are easy as hell to maintain. Most people want T2s in the long run though, I personaly have been there done that, wish someone would have told me to get a t2 right off the bat...

Glad you're considering an FC man...they can be great fun realiable cars...just make sure the one you get is thoroughly what you want...and that its looked over for any issues. Nothing can hurt you more than a bad experience early on to hinder your belief in the rotary. So just make sure the car runs good, idles fine, and hasn't been "messed with" too much.



I've had my 91 n/a for 4.5 years now and its been amazing. Always has gotten me where I've needed to go...and to be honest with you the only maintenece I've done is changing the oil and plugs. Sure some little adjustments like TPS or rebuilding brake calipers but the car has always been super strong and reliable.



Just keep reading up on the FC...whether it be here or in the archives on the other forum...or www.teamfc3s.org or www.fc3s.org ...both great FC sites.

im a senior and i bought an 86 n/a with 110,000 miles in good condition and i havent really had any problems with it yet and i have owned it for about 4 months now. i love the car it is so fun.

I've had my n/a FC for a little over a year now. It has over 140k miles on it, and it runs like a champ. It was my first car, and I started working on little things here and there almost as soon as I had it (minor mods...not repairs). Real easy to work on. I beat the crap out of it on a regular basis, and it just seems to ask for more.

i had my 86 NA auto for 4 yrs, and it performed great, but it did give me some problems. the tranny blew after 1 yr, cost $1500 to rebuild --> lesson: dont buy an automatic. after 3 yrs of use, the engine blew, cost $2500 to rebuild --> lesson: buy from an original owner who knows about rotaries and knows how to care for them. 140K on any engine is rough, but on a poorly maintianed rotary, it's a time bomb.



other than that, the only problem i ever got was the occasional flooding, which is easy to resolve. N/A's are great reliable cars. just find one in good condition that has been maintained. also, with a haynes manual and a FSM, you can fix almost anything. i've tought myself how to change brakes, springs, exhaust, interior crap, etc. these cars are quite easy to work on with a basic tool set.



my turbo is another story...hehe. but, all those troubles are worth it when i'm boosting at 10 psi and have one of the fastest, best handling cars on the road

my friend and i both had rx7's in highschool, he still has his, he hasnt had to do much to it at all

I still have my 87 Sport, which i got my junior year of high school. . IT was reliable as hell, only thing i broke was the clutch flex line. Now it has 3 times the hp.

I think you can handle it. But dont get the car you posted 100,xxx miles for 3 grand? ya right. I bought my 88 vetr with 30,xxx on the clock for the same price. If you can get 6-7k fr the car dont buy a crap one. I would recomend getting an S5 N/A and starting with that. N/A's will help you with the basics of the rotary, also, N/A's are a little easier to diagnose whena problem does happen. After you feel that your comfortable enough to work these cars go for the TII if you want. But to tell you the truth, I have owned a 90 GXL, an 87 TII and an 88 Vert. The 90 GXL (which is N/A) was my favorite car.



So in my final step. Find a better car with lower miles and try to find an S5 (89-91)
