What could be the problem when the coolant fan light is lit on my warning light cluster?

89 Rag 07-14-2005 08:54 PM

i didn't know there was such a thing, a coolant fan light.

fc3s4utnv 07-14-2005 09:30 PM

I dont think S5's had it. S4's have thoough, just guessing I would say something with the cooling fan is wrong.

I know it comes on when the water temp reaches a certain point and the aux. E-fan comes on, but if it is constantly lit, your thermo fan switch could be bad (small one wire switch on top of the thermostat housing). Also check to see if it has come unplugged. I've run into both probs.

Cool, thanks, didnt even think of that.

Not all cars have those though, mine doesnt. It has the hole in the water neck but no sensor, wiring, or the fan. Does you car over heat?

RETed 07-15-2005 04:44 AM

All cars with the smallish electric fan should have it.

If you have ABS, you don't have the light in the warning cluster, but it was moved to the instrument gauge cluster itself - I think it's just a round light in the water temp gauge?

All Turbo II's had them, and I think maybe GTU's had them. Like RETed said, if your car has the small OEM E-fan, you should have that sensor.

Yes I do have the little sensor in the filler neck, and yes my car does over heat, what is that a sign of that would be different than eny other sign of over heating?

Maybe the sensor is bad and your fan isn't coming on?

fc3s4utnv 07-15-2005 03:38 PM

start checking wires and voltage. My car doesnt have all of this stuff but it has been overheating latley, even after a helper e-fan, new thermostat, rad hoses, and water pump. But then I got to checking the rad with a laser temp gauge and found i had six colgged rows.

Ya im prob right there with ya, my rad is some OEM wanna be brass POS. Ill start checking voltage with my DMM.

I wouldnt have thought that it would have made my car run hot on the highway and be normal just sitting. But you can get a koyo for around 300 bucks plus shipping.

drunkin_idiot 07-15-2005 11:43 PM

Bleh, I think im planning on selling my car shortly, so Im not gonna waste my money on buying a koyo.

fc3s4utnv 07-16-2005 02:09 PM

Oh hell then just tell the person when you sell it. Hey this thing needs a radiator, deal with it or dont buy it.

Why are you blaming the electric fan for your overheating problems?

Overheating can be caused be a BAZILLION other causes.

Look elsewhere...
