I checked the clutch fluid level over the weekend on my 86 and it was empty. I filled it to MAX level and drove it home. I just went to drive it tonight and the pedal started going toward the floor... I thought oh ****, turned it around and ground the **** out of my tranny just to get it back home. I checked the level again and its empty! I knew I should have bled it over the weekend but I didn't have time. I checked it for leaks and everything is dry. How much fluid can the clutch master and slave hold??? Do you think its leaking somewhere else like into where it connects to the release fork (I have no clue here)??? This sucks. Its the one thing I didn't check before buying this piece a couple weeks ago.

Sounds like a leak somewhere, but it wont come out where it meets the release fork for sure. Its either in the clutch master, the slave, or the rubber flex hose that goes to the slave from the firewall.

There really isn't much way for it to get into the release fork area, the slave cylinder is behind the front of the tranny, so it would just leak off the side of the tranny if it were the slave cylinder. It's interesting that you mention it though, cause my 84 is doing a similar thing and I just replaced the slave. My guess was the clutch master cylinder itself. The salve holds hardly any fluid, if you bled it and got fluid out, it's full. Let's face it, it has to be the slave or the master, or one of the lines or a combination there of, there isn't anything else in the system.

I hear ya but I checked for leaks with a flashlight and everything was dry. I'm wondering if it was just that low that when I filled up the reservoir, it took it all in?? I don't know, I'll have to bleed it this weekend and see if I can get any pedal back first.

the master will leak inside the car, get a flashlight and look under the dash. it could also be the ribber hose, they like to split right before the crimped ends

they LOVE to split on the crimped ends https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...DIR#>/moon.gif i suggest getting or making a aeroquip (stainless braided) one....i had the same problem on a rainy night far from home and it was a massive air bubble in the system...bleed the system till the clutch fluid res. is to min and fill it up again 2 times. I have seen fluid actually creep around air bubbles in hydraulics....no ****. Do your self a favor and just replace the slave and master cylinders at the same time...and be poor https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

My master cyl was leaking for a while and i couldn't tell cause it leaks right from the clutch

pedal on the carpet but i have black carpeting.

so i would find out when it was empty and my feet were slipping all over the pedals.

The rebuild kit cost mabe like 30 bucks.

I looked under the dash and under the carpet... there are no leaks anywhere, not near the clutch rod to master, nothing... I don't know. The master rebuild kit is $14 and the slave kit is $10 if I need them. I expect stuff like this on a just about 17 year old car with 167K... lol, that's why I bought it for parts, yet I'm driving it still https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

Just to warn, I have heard that rebuilding, no matter how well you do it, won't be as good as getting a new or remanufactured one.
