Well I have seen the term bump start used both ways before so I guess the meaning depends on the context. For example if you want to check compression on your rotors, you can take the plugs out of one of the housing and have someone turn the key over for a second or two just kind of "bumping" the key.

Or you can bump start it in second gear during a slow roll. This works great when your battery is dead.
