The whole interior is gone, I'm now in the process of putting the slightly modded dash back in, but what else can I get rid of that, isn't obvious... Just name off some parts or where they are located, I want this thing as light as possible, but It's still needs to be street legal, and have a stock apperance from the outside
Thanks in advance |
Is this for your '79? Just pretend you are a cop, and look for things wrong with the car. If its something the cop wouldnt like not seeing, dont remove it.

you know those big steel bumber reinforcements? ya, they are like 100 Lbs a piece...
If you get in an accident your fucked anyway, take them out... This way when you get in an accident you'll be... Well. Fucked. I am acctually trying to drop my car down to the 2200 2300 range.. is this at all possible to do with an 86 Gxl? I have no power steering, no Ac, no air pump, basiccally no interior.. I have removed my bumber reinforcements my goal: to have a 200 HP N/A with a Weight of 2200-2300 Lbs That would be a pretty quick little car, BUt is it possible to go that light? |
I've even thought about lexan windows. Are they legal? that would be a huge weight drop
Oh yeah, Aluminum Hood helps too. Steel - 40-50 Lbs Alum. 25 Lbs Small Rims ( Maybe Convertable ) Very light weight. |
Pull off all the tow hooks front and rear. The bumper reinforcements are reasonably heavy, but only the brackets are metal. The actual beam is a composite piece.
You could also remove the fender liners, but they're plastic and don't weigh all that much. The dash board is really heavy too. I don't know if you've already removed it or not. |
FOR OFF-ROAD USE ONLY WHEN A CAGE IS INSTALLED!!!!!
Take a Plasma cutter and take out the Door Side Impact beams Make lightening holes in all of the interior supports/sheetmetal |
Banzai, I almost suggested that. You could also leave the door beams and just cut out most of the inner door sheet metal. I just did that last week on my race car project with a jig saw.

Plasma Cutters rock!!!!
|
now that banzai mentioned cages, how much does a typical cage weigh?
I've been thinking about gutting my interior and putting a cage in the car then removing some of the safety pieces that are heavy, like the bumper reinforcements.... just to make the safer and keep it light. seems like a car with a cage would be alot safer than the stock production vehicle. |
1.75" x .095" DOM 13 GA. Tubing weighs 1.679#/ft. Total weight depends on the type of cage.
