how many people on this forum have blown an Apex seal on a non-turbo model?

my 88 GXL is running on one rotor. i want to know if is possile that it has a bad apex seal or if the is just too much carbon build up on the apex seals.

i have sea foam and water running through it to steam it and it still runs like crap.

thanks,

Nathan

Everything can, and will break, eventually. A ghetto compression test will will give you an idea if it is an apex seal.

If you know someone who has a boroscope, pull the exhaust and look.

depends on how many miles is on the motor and how it's been treated i suppose, but yes it is possable that your running on a blown seal, although your power i would imagine would be significantly less even to the point of the car almost not being driveable.. the only way to tell for sure is to either pull the motor apart, do a compression test, or as previously stated, use a boroscope

the GSL-SE i had had 60-65ish compression all around the rear rotor and it was still driveable and had plenty of power once it got going, down low it was a bitch though

Mine is currently running on really really low compresion, one the mazda checker 2 chambers didnt even show up,. which leads to belive blown seal. I dont really have any driveability issues except for hills, and its a pain in the ass to get started and it smokes like a bitch untill it warms up.

well mine is extremely weak. tops out at 65mph after 4 miles of WOT, not enough power to use 5th gear, etc.

but if you hold the throttle down then it will have a smooth idle, just it only has 1/2 the normal exhaust pulses.

fc3s4utnv 04-19-2005 02:50 PM

Well mine is not nearly that bad. It sounds like you have other problems besides compression.

no i would actuly say that is his problem, time for a rebuild! there arent many things i could think of that could cause his problems beside's a weak engine.. altho i've driven one similar and all it needed was a carb rebuild so go over your carb completely before jumping to conclusions... oh and your cat's, make sure there not clogged

i gutted the cats thinking that was the problem, not it.

i was thinking carbon build up because it is sickeningly rich. i only get 4-5 mpg. i will go through the fuel injection system then see if it will run

whoops, forgot this was a second gen, sorry https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/happy.png but if your gas mileage is that bad, replace your filter, get your injectors cleaned, etc, basicly go over everything.. check your ecu for shits and giggles to make sure nothing is wrong with it.. after that im not sure what else you could check

nightwolf_4_98 04-20-2005 06:26 PM

also if your getting that much fuel into the motor you could be looseing compression due to flooding etc, the gas will in essence wash off the oil on the walls of the motor and comprimise the compression... if i remember right https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683561.gif so fix that fuel problem and im pretty sure you'll get your power and compression back
