Yes, the two are really not related in this way.

You've got a rotational assembly out-of-balance problem. Has to be if it will do it in neutral. I wouldn't worry about the mounts. The rotary is a very smooth running engine when tuned correctly. That's not to say that I believe tuning would solve your problem since it sounds too violent.

I will refer you to the FSM and forums for front cover removal procedures. It's been too long for me to spout off the top of my head. Getting that bolt loose can be a real booger.

I took the car for a quick drive today. I got on a little boost and at around 5500 rpm the clutch felt like it completly gave way. Looks like I'll be pulling the transmission again. I removed the tranny right when this problem started, and the clutch and PP looked fine. I'm afraid when I pull it off this time they will look ok too. Is there anything wrong with running the motor without the transmission? I realize I will need to install a bellhousing to connect the starter, but at least I will be able to rule out the engine as the culprit.

Turned out the key between the e-shaft and flywheel took a ****. Not sure why this happened, but the flywheel was pretty tight and there was no endplay in the e-shaft. The car is running now with a new one. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.
