When I was pulling away from a stop today on some backroads I went WOT through first gear and shifted into second and got back on it, and about 500rpm later i got a little bit of wheelhop and then it turned into a HUGE vibration and banging sound from the rear end. After that, any time I was starting to hit boost or getting into power, the vibration/shaking and banging occured again, and the car felt like it just wheel hopping really bad and wasnt accelerating anymore. Anybody have any ideas what could have happened? I looked underneath the car and I couldnt see anything visibily wrong, so I'm guessing there could be wrong with the diff? Any help would be much appreciated.....

I have a S5 T-II if that makes a difference.

check the front diff. mount where the driveshaft connects to the diff.

If the front differential mount is bad, you will hear & feel a thunk when you start to roll in 1st, as the front of the differential hits the bottom of the tunnel.

the thing is, I dont really hear a thunk when I take off from first. It only occurs once i get into the powerband and it isnt just a single thunk. I played around with it today and it appears that it isnt as bad in 3rd gear, and it hasnt happened so far in 4th or 5th gear...

hey, first post here. i was just about to post about a similar problem. i have a 86 gxl. it has a stage 2 exedy clutch and stock lsd. my problem starts the second i engage into gear. i hear a clunk almost everytime i engage into first. then, almost everytime i shift into 2nd, same thing. shift into 3rd, same. i wouldnt mind this that much, its just that when i shift to 4th, my car vibrates a little bit. when i shift into 5th, my car feels as if it would fall into pieces. it also vibrates when i roll in neutral around 35 mph. i have been told that the problem was my driveshaft.. any gurus out there who can help a newb out TIA

its the front diff mount, had mine like that 2 years ago. me and a friend took the whole rear down and threw the shitty one away and he fabricated a solid one and welded it back. its all good rightnow but there is a little vibration at high rpms. the good thing is that my friend did it for free. saved me $125 + labor.

When you have it on jackstands to check the diff mount, turn each rear wheel back & forth.

Listen & feel for excess backlash in the the 4 rear axle CV joints.

You could even have a broken axle.
