Whats up all!? I'm new to the rotary thing and I have a couple of questions...

I have a 87/88 RX-7.. I'm not sure exactly what it is b/c there are so many different things about the car that i'm not sure what year or even the model it is. It is a turbod rotary I know for sure!

One of my questions is that it has NA guages on the car but the temp gauge and fuel gauge don't work and to make things even more odd, the Volt gauge acts like a boost gauge where when boost hits the gauge shoots up and when you let off the gas it goes back down...Any suggestions? I haven't had the chance to take apart the dash to see if there are any wires hanging, but I will soon.

One more for now, the brakes aren't the greatest in the world, it almost seems like they need to be bleed but the guy that I bought it from said it was the brake booster (he didn't know much about cars so i'm not sure if he was right) any way to tell for sure whats wrong?

Sorry for the life story but any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

Chris

Welcome to the forum. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683827.gif

It sounds like someone didn't know what the hell they were doing.

If you can take pics and post them up it would be to your advantage.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like you have some electrical fun to partake in.

hybridTII 08-10-2005 02:05 PM

Thanks for the Welcome! It seems like a great place here!

I'm going to try to take pics really soon, my camera gave up on me so I'm prob just going to take pics with my phone.

I'm really hoping that I don't have to do too much electrical work, if I do have to do a lot then, aftermarket gauges here I come!!!

rowtareh 08-11-2005 01:48 AM

It looks like whoever you bought the car from, jerry rigged everything. What is the VIN number on the front dashboard? Or even on the door jam, we can tell you the year of the car by the VIN.

Welcome to nopistons.com!

Welcome to the fun.

That seems to be a relatively early '87 factory turbo car. FC332 Your's was the 5,125th car after mine out of Hiroshima. The date on mine is 3/86.

The car itself sounds like a nightmare though. Why the Hell does it have NA gauges in it?

I wish you the best of luck with it.

hybridTII 08-12-2005 08:09 AM

WOW! That's awsome that you can tell me about the car by reading the numbers! I know the J means that it was made in Japan but thats about it. Thanks for the help!

As for the gauges....I have no clue why they were swapped but I'm about to go on ebay now and get some turbo gauges. Do you think this will fix my Coolant and Fuel gauge? If it doesn't fix it, where do I run new wires to so I can make the gauge work. If I have to get an aftermarket gauge, thats fine, the temp gauge is my biggest concern at the moment, the fuel can wait.

Thanks again for you help!!!

rowtareh 08-15-2005 11:57 PM

I dont think that the 88 TII's came with boost gauges in the stock cluster. Just buy a 3 gauge a-pillar pod, throw a coolant, fuel, and boost gauge in there and deal with the stupid NA gauges.

I could be wrong about the TII's coming with boost gauges in the cluster.

Oh, The FC3S after the J in the vin, of course is the chassis code. You will see references to the 2nd Gen RX-7 being called FC,FC3S, etc.

Have fun with the electrical problems. Pictures would help alot also.

Here are some pics...I tried to edit the first post so you wouldn't have to scroll down but here they are anyways. Let me know what you think!

Is this an aftermarket turbo? It looks really old to be aftermarket...

OK, I've got it. Some dufus put NA faces on it. What looks like a voltmeter is really your boost guage. This fits your description and this is the location of the boost gauge. I don't know why this didn't come to my mind earlier.

All TIIs have boost gauges, it's the FD that was missing one.

As far as your temp and fuel meters, I think you may just need to chase them down independantly. Fuses, test the senders etc.

Your turbo looks stock.

Good looking FC.

Cheers

Thanks for the help!

Where is the temp sender at? I heard it could be at the bottom of the radiatior or it could be behind the water pump.... Does anyone know where it is?

I went online and bought a service manual but it came on a cd and is hard to find stuff, I also went out and bought a haynes manual, it helps some but doesn't tell me exactly what I need to know...

HeffSpooled 08-19-2005 02:08 PM

I think that sender is the one under the oil filter pedestal. The FSM (sect.50, pg.40) says it's on connector EM-33 which shows it there. S/B a yellow wire with a white stripe.

Did you get the FSM on the CD? Is it in *.pdf? I don't find it that hard to use, but maybe because I've been looking at it for years. btw it is available for free download several places.

Cheers

hybridTII 08-24-2005 09:26 PM

Cool thanks! Yea I have it on the cd...

I'll take a look at the sensor, where can I find those downloads?

Right now I have to get the tranny rebuilt cause it keeps popping out of 5th gear....

got another question...once i get it back from the shop, i want to upgrade the turbo and intercooler. The question is, which turbo would be a good upgrade? I was looking at a greddy t06...Is that overkill? My main concern is not blowing the motor! (and the freshly rebuilt tranny)

Where they hell did you get that from, you know it wont, its gonna blow up on him and he gonna leanr to love hate it more. The better you treat it the more money it costs.

nismo convert 08-25-2005 01:31 PM

is the Monster Tach really needed? the stock one is as big... and you also have s5 vert tailights.

rowtareh 08-25-2005 11:40 PM

Oh whatever guys, you know what I mean.

Upgrading the turbo is a good choice, but also take into consideration that you will need to upgrade the ECU, fuel injection, downpipe, manifold, etc. It can be costly, but is worth it.

HeffSpooled 08-27-2005 01:47 AM

Yeah, upgrading the turbo is a can of worms. Or is it monkeys? No, that's a barrel and that's fun. Well that fits too if you've got the loot.
