I just put in a new clutch and I think the disc may be chattering. Can someone explain to me what the clutch disc is doing when it chatters? What causes chatter? Can it be fix(inexpensively) or is it irreversable? Does it cause the disc to wear quicker? Can it lead to other major problems? Basically what I am asking is can I still drive and race on a clutch that is doing this? Thanks alot for all the help with this pain in the ass clutch.

explain in better detail what exactly it is that it's doing! man when it rains it pours huh!

It sure does Johann. When the car is in nuetral I can here a chattering sound coming from the clutch. When I depress the clutch pedal the noise lessens but is still there. When I put it in gear it goes away altogether. Otherwise the clutch acts the way it is supposed to. Any ideas.

it could be the throwout bearing, did you change that?

Yes I did. The only things I didn't change were the master and slave cylinders. Any other ideas?

Mine does that too, but it's done that since I've had the car (few months).

mine does it too... it just chatters when in neutral cuz its not spining anythnig... its just spinning loose... as long as its not ,aking noise when engaged in gear i think its fine

phinsup 10-01-2002 11:10 PM

If it makes noise with the clutch out it can't be the throwout bearing.... if your clutch is properly adjusted the throwout bearing isn't in play when the clutch pedal is out, if it is you have about a week before the thing is pieces.

7mech 10-02-2002 04:29 AM

Well if the thing should be in pieces in about a week then I must not have clutch chatter. I've had it in for 2 weeks now and nothing has happened. Maybe it is a normal sound my car makes. I probably never noticed it before. Thanks Phins.

90_GTU_jeremy 10-02-2002 05:23 AM

dude its normal.. its called clutch chatter... its just the sound of an unrestricted plate spinning... even some new cars have it

Oh i thought that it was making noises when it was engaged. My friends CYM FD does the same thing with his lightweight flywheel. So i wouldn't worry about.

Thank you for the comforting replies. I've got about 40 more miles to go before it's totally broken in. This weekend is ass wipping time for some V-8 drivers. Time to get more kills. I haven't had a kill in about 2 months now. I think I'm starting to have withdrawls...HaHa. Cool this is post #200!!!!
