What exactly is the purpose of the air pump, assuming the car is completely stock?



Trying to get an idea on what exactly that thing does.

uh if i remember right, on an S4 it basicly serves no purpose and you can remove it... on an S5 you need it to open the 5th and 6th ports so its gotta stay... there's a write up of it in the faq sections just above this if you go in and take a look

 

Air Pump pumps air into the catalytic Converter so it operates properly, without it the cat burns up. (short version)

yep and in so doing it also makes the car pass smog

 

Hell I dont have the cats anymore so I guess the pump goes bye bye now.

 

Also you can pull & block off the ACV & remove it's exhaust pipe.

Another function of the S4 air pump is to supply the anti-afterburn valve in the ACV unit.

So now it will be - whiiiir - PSSSHH - pow - whiiir - PSSHH - pow!
