i just totaled my srt-4 and now im looking into buying a 91' 2nd gen rx7...the car im looking at has somewhere over 100,000 miles, i think its stock too. he's selling it for $700. any advices what to look for when i actually look at the car? im planning of going sometime this week. another thing, whats the average lifespan of a 2nd gen motor? thanks

i would buy it though. a 91 for $700! driving? thats a damn good price around me.

 

GET IT! if it runs. even if it doesnt run, as long as its in decent shape, $700 isnt bad. i paid $600 for my 91, and i love it

 

Be certain to understand this now. Your N/A will likely never be nearly as fast as your SRT was. If you want a car that goes that fast, or could possibly go that fast, look into a TII or FD. To get into the low 14's/high 13's you are looking at thousands of dollars into the motor, a standalone, exhaust and custom intake.



If its a not running car you can get the motor rebuilt for anywhere from a little over $1000 as a DIY, or many grand for a full bridgeport.



One thing I suggest though is that you warm the car up, put it in neutral and let out the clutch. If there is a significant whine coming from the transmission tunnel under your right arm then the tranny is a wild card. It could be just fine, or it could be on its last leg. But again, for $700 thats something that can be worked with.

Other than that, find an experianced rotary shop and have them do a full inspection. I can guarantee you the car will cost you a lot of time and money (as with any car of its age), so be prepared when making this investment.
