I saw an 89 Turbo II about 2 hrs ago. The body and interior are very good. There are problems though. For some reason, the engine does not pull as hard as I thought 200 hp should pull. He said he replaced the engine about 3 years ago and had the turbo rebuilt. Also, there is a slight stuttering when boost comes on at about 4-5000 RPM. He has Racing Beat downpipe and exhaust and a really dirty K&N filter. He also has a sound system with a box in the back that holds his 12" subs. He said that weighed about 100 lbs. Could the reason the engine doesn't pull very hard be because of the extra weight? or is it just a bad engine with low compression? Also, how much are tranny rebuilds? The 2nd gear grinds on the car. Thanks for everyones help

The weight wouldn't make it bog down really. Did it make boost before 4K RPM??? It should! I would say its the dirty air filter...you'd be suprised at how much that'll affect your flow of power on a turbo car. Also, he should have more then 200HP w/ that exhaust...I'd say at least 210 to 215...the car should have felt good. Is he using a cat at all? If he is, maybe its just clogged..which would also cause loss in power. Also, his turbo may have been rebuilt poorly. These are all things it could be, I'd have to see it first.

Thanks Rotaryman. The car began boosting at around 3k, but all throughout the rev range it didn't seem to make much more boost. Also, he has no cat. Do you think it could be the engine at all? Low compression? Also, how much to rebuild the tranny? His 2nd gear grinds miserably.

yeah, boost should be coming on even before 3000K...mine does. you should feel it increasing as well as the revs go up. the stereo i don't think would cause that much of a slowing down affect.

when you say its slower though...what are you comparing it to? like what car?...n/a FC? the T2's are fast but if you're used to driving like a C5 or something its not gonna as quick hehe...

yeah, could be a number of things...dirty air filter, bad plugs...dirty fuel filter, clogged injectors, vacuum leak..........

does it flood? or have a hot start problem? usually those are signs of bad compression....

Actually, it doesn't flood very easily so i guess it doesn't have bad compression. I was comparing the car to a lightened 87 Turbo that I drove awhile back. This car feels considerably slower. Almost as if there is no turbo. It doesn't get up to speed almost as fast too. My 91 Galant Vr-4 (195hp) feels much faster. Could it be the rebuilt turbo? Maybe the shop he sent it to did not do such a good job... Thanks for your help.
