I only wish that $7000CND = $5600USD. Unfortunately the general exchange rate from Canadian $ to US $ is about 1.6 depending on your institution.

So that puts the price around $4400USD.

Rob x7, thank you for the advice on the paint. The seller speculated that the entire car would need repainting but it is something that I will bring up with him as something I will be required to do.

Anyone have any comments on the shifter play or the gas pedal non-smooth pressure travel?
Not just a simple re-paint, but one that needs to be sanded down to the primer. Jambs and all, everywhere. Price is too high, bargain him down, wayyyyy down. But only if you expect to put a few thousand into the car after you get it, not a few hundred. Shifter play- really bad bushings? Gas pedal- check the linkage under the hood, see if the whole rail is bolted on tight, if its loose it may give you the symptoms that you speak of.

So that's about $1.25USD

Really sorry about the length of that original post ... I'll try to summarize my questions:

1. The shifter feels like there's a lot of play in the neutral area. Is that normal?

2. The gas pedal feels very soft on the top and very firm on the bottom. That normal?

3. The turbo is leaking oil into the engine but will be replaced. Does that sound like it would cause a drop in idle from 700 to 500 (reverse surging?) and almost a stall.

4. Rust on the bottom of the doors, think I can just sand and prime?

5. Peeling paint ... think that means the whole car is ready to peel?

Thanks for your responses!
$5600 U.S. should buy you a near mint car, not one that needs alot of work.
$5600 = LOW MILE PERFECT TII!!! eg 40k miles.......
Maybe not 40K, but you can easily get into an 89+ TII in good shape for that price.
if you look around you can find them....
70K would be a good number to shoot for. Most TII's with less than 40K are probably in a junkyard. :P
phins has one
You guys extrapolate too much.
or not enough
Extrapolation is what makes people think they can get 500 HP at a bargain. :P
i can
As long as you dont want it running for more then 10 minutes or so, Vosko is the man!

Again, thank you for your responses. Your experience is very much appreciated.

I am in contact with the seller and have asked him to check the throttle and gas pedal linkage at the Mazda dealer that is servicing the turbo.

Here's a couple of things that he's done recently that cost him quite a bit of money:

- turbo rebuild ~$2600CND ~ $1600USD from Mazda <- has receipt

- changed all belts ~ $1000CND ~ $600USD from Mazda <- checking with Mazda

- new clutch at 118,000km ~$?

So that's about $3600 of the $7000 that he's asking. I am having my mech inspect the car late this week or early next. I plan on offering him $6000CND for it. Does that sound fair considering it requires $2000 paint work?

How much should it be? I know that for Honda's changing the timing belt at the 100,000km mark is around that price. Oops .. said the H word. Sorry. And I know there's no timing belt for the 7 but there sure look like lots of other belts in there.

All 4 belts couldn't take more than an hour to cgange. They're about $10 each.
