I just bought this car and found that the driver side floorboard rusted through the bottom and the support that the seat is supposed to be on is all torn off. I was wondering if I could just cut a thick piece of steel and weld it on in place. could I do this?

If i was you i would check and make sure there isnt any more rust or problem spots, Or have you already checked the rest of the car over? If there isnt any other real structural damage there should be no problem cutting some new peices and welding them in.

I wouldn't cut just a flat peice of steel, I would go to a junk yard, and cut out the section of the floor pan you need. The car is a uni-body, and a flat peice of steel probably won't be as strong, unless it is much thicker (because of the desigh that is made onto all the car's steel). And if you go much thicker than 16-18 guage steel, it will be hard to weld the RX-7's 20-22 (can't remember which) guage steel to it.
Anyways, go get the floor section you need out of another car. I had one I could have cut up for you, but my parents just hauled my parts car off to the scrap yard today

No, it is actually in pretty good shape, just mayboe two or three small dents on the front bumper, but when I saw that I was mad as hell. And it's not really that bad, it just where the seat bolts on that metal part going across it is where it was all messed up.
