So I have found a '87 Turbo II with 55k on the clock going for $5k. I consider this to be VERY reasonable, and I 'd really like to the buy the car, however, I would first like to know the differences between the two versions of the TurboII. Specifically, which parts will be completely different, and which will be the same? I understand that the '89-'91 TurboIIs had a computer controlled waste gate, along with a completely different turbo design, and some cosmetic differences, but what else is different? If the technology put into the car makes that much of a difference, I will pass up this car in favor of a '89-'91. I should note that I am planning to swap out the turbo, replace the waste gate, yada yada yada, down the line(2-3 years from now). Thanks guys, this forum has been great!

The main difference in power is due to increased boost.

The 87-88 TII's actually make 182 HP. The 18 HP can be made up with an intake and catback.

You got to remember the 87-88 TII are lighter vs the 89-91 versions. pre 88 have lower compression rotor which makes them more safer for more boost. 89+ have lighter but highr compression which bumps up redline and torque but are a little more prone to detonation.



89+ TII are hard to find. I would get an 89+ because of the updated styling.

I'm driven a 91 Turbo II right now and personally I think its the best car I've ever hit 240 kmph in. Shined up with Enkei 19s chicks think its a Ferrari :p



I'd suggest goen with one.. but then again I've never driven a pre-89 model.

Just a word of warning...



when you're looken at a used rx7, make sure to take a close look at the previous owner..



if they look like they drove it like a 90 year old I wouldnt buy it.



I made the mistake of buying one like that, and due to mass carbon build-up my compresion disappeared after it sat a week and it needs a rebuild... (just found this out today, and yes I'm gonna get real drunk tonight :( )
