Right now I'm thinking option 3. I want my car to handle well. Not just straight line performance.
I admire your ideals.

Me too - I like going 'round corners hard, not just straight line sprints - hey, we have roundabouts un **** over here
We've already mollested the firewall and removed some metal; thinking about a totally custom (and cool ) intake system to remove the need to cut more metal out - in for a penny in for a pound as they say...

Are you gonna be comfortable having your shifter slid back?
the shifter will be in the stock location in the transmission tunnel, however it will be move 6 inches forward on the shift fork (inside the transmission).
I took some pics of the engine sitting in the engine bay. I'll post them as soon as my gf email them to me (I used her cam since I don't have one).

I used to live in kentucky where you had to drive about 20 minutes to find a road that was strait for anywhere close to an 1/4 of a mile. So as long as your car could carry speed and pull some out of the corner you lived in a wet dream.
Now I've moved to florida where everything is beutiful, but the roads are all straight, and all of the sudden straight line speed has to be a big consideration.
I don't think driving an rx7 is even really about straight line speed, hell any v8 with money dumped in could give you that. Makes me happy to see that you guys upgrade yoru rx7 while keeping the whole picture in mind.
About the first year I had my 7 I rarely raced other cars, yet I drove it (like a maniac) every day. Some people can't fathom why you would want to drive your car hard if you weren't racing someone.
Maybe america has too many straight roads.

hrmm.. question.. why are you guys doing all this shifting and cutting instead of just modifying the subframe to place the engine in the engine compartment and mating it to the transmission. what am i missing? what are you guys gaining over guys who go the route ive been planning using basically just the modified subframe/rack. this has been bothering me for some time.. why the descreptancies?

Here's a thought:
Looking at the side of the motor, create a new manifold that places the uim lower AND farther forward than the stock manifold. By moving it forward as well as down you could maintain the length of the lower runners. Think of a parallelagram being squashed.
How much extra clearance does a dry sump provide?

A 20b is about 7 inches longer than a 13b. If you chose the route of leaving the tranny where it is, then you'll have to let the extra length (7 inches) extend towards the front of the car. But then the front of the engine will run into the steering rack. This is why folks have to lower the steering rack to clear the engine. Personally, I want the front of the engine in the same place as the stock engine. Thus, I have to move the transmission back 7 inches. The only way is to cut the firewall and transmission tunnel. By moving the weight of the engine and tranny closer to the center of the car, weight distribution will improve since a 20b is much heavier than a 13b. The bennefit is better handling.

too much work. Easier to cut firewall. A dry sump pan is only 1 inch thick.
Anywho, the firewall and transmission tunnel in my FD is cut. I'll post pics this week.
