20b Power Capabilities
#1
having owned a few fc's a few years back...i learned alot about rx-7's and have a huge respect for the design and capabilities. I want to build an FD and i want big power. I am looking for about 650 RWHP. I have actually considered doing a turbo LS1...easy reliable power and cheaper, but dont want to lose respect from people. but at the same time they sound great and it would be fun torque ... i do love the rotary, but its harder to get power and more expensive. i know you will gripe about the weight dist...but if you do it right its not bad at all.
my question is can i get the power im looking for out of a 20B? this will be a pleasure car but i want it to be reliable enough to drive every day.
twin or single turbo? opinions on spool time...
one last question, i was thinking about a T56 tranny to achieve a 6 speed...opinions?
looking for some opinions and knowledge, thanks in advance

An ls1 is lighter than a 20b with manifolds by the rational that a ls1 is about the weight of a 13BT with manifolds.
You can get 650 out of a 20b, it has been done. I would think with a single turbo and some porting.
more lag = higher peak power (yes a genralization)
less lag = better streetability, lower peak power
Have you driven a car with 650hp? With the same weight as an FD? Are you sure you really need that much power to enjoy it or do you want to brag about numbers?

yes, it can be done with a 20B. Like stated earlier... have you driven a 650rwhp car that weighs that little? I'd invest in some rubber seat covers while you are at it.

i have been in a few supras making that much power, and its incredible, supras do weigh about 700lbs more though. Ya i do want to brag about the numbers, but it will also be incredible...
how much am i looking at to make 650 with a 20B...my guess is about $20k?
thx

20k AT LEAST just for the motor and hardware that you are going to need to support 650hp.

Engine and porting... $7,000-8000 or so
ECU to control it........$1300
beefy fuel system......$1,500+
new tires and rims......$2,000-3,000+
clutch and flywheel.....$800
intercooler.................$1,500
radiator.....................$400
stuff too lil to remember.....$5,000+
Subframe.....................$1,000+
Labor..........................$5,000+
good luck trying to do it for less than $20K and it be right unless you are a very capable mechanic.

That's your first problem. Caring what other people think.
And I would recommend driving an FD with even 450 to the wheels and see if you still need 650. Unless this is a car just to get respect from other people.

you can buy an engine from pettitracing for about 12k and its sporting 550hp on upgraded stock twins..at least you could before..been awhile since I've really looked around.. but a 20b can be bought for about 3500 or so the ports are already pretty large. You can make a 20b take lots of power its all in how deep your pockets are, and how much your willing to spend.

your gonna be looking at closer to $30k man. im also planning on such an upgrade sometime next spring.
considering going with a v8, but im thinking a 20b with rew housings, maybe a t76 or ax7592 or something.
anyone know if a 03-04 cobra tranny would work well? im looking to use the cobra diff since its slightly lighter and much stronger. and with that much power, having those gears might be a good thing.

I second that, who cares what other people think do what you want.
