Check the F.A.Qs at the top of the page, or the pinned topics, just above.

First, Identify the leading coil.

There are two pickup coils in the distributor.

The one closest to the passenger side is the leading. Sort of the right front pickup. The one on the firewall side is the trailing. Sort of left rear.

The igniter (a small plastic box) on the side of the distributor body, or on the left fender connected to that leading pickup will also be connected to the leading coil. Pull the connector off of the leading igniter if it is obvious which one that is (On the distributor) and connect one lead from a volt/ohm meter.

With the ignition turned off (or you will need another meter).

Chinese job for 5 bucks is fine. Set it on the one ohm scale and short the leads together, then adjust the meter to zero.

Touch the two posts on each coil with the other lead. One of those will read zero on the meter

That is the leading coil. Why people swap around this layout is beyond me, but I found it missconnected many times.

On the distributor cap are the cast in Letters and numbers that show you which tower each secondary wire goes into.

The lower plugs are the leading. The upper plugs are the trailing. The rotor housing (the plugs are in these) closer to the front is the number one housing. The rotor housing closer to the firewall is number two.

Run a long secondary (high voltage) wire from the leading tower on the cap (It just has an "L" beside it) to the leading coil.

Run a long secondary wire from the trailing tower on the cap (it has just a "T" beside it) to the trailing coil.

Install a plug wire on the lower plug in the front housing and plug the other end into the tower marked "L 1"

on the cap. That's leading one.

Install a plug wire on the upper plug in the front housing and connect the other end in the tower marked "T 1"

for trailing one.

Install a plug wire on the lower plug on the rear housing. Connect the other end to the tower on the cap marked "L 2" for leading plug rear (2) housing.

Install a wire on the upper plug on the rear housing. Connect the other end to the cap tower marked "T 2" for trailing plug rear housing.

There is an extra tower that is unmarked. It should have a plastic rain hat on it, and is only a vent for the cap.

Above is the same for the points system. Just leave out the ingniter part.

Once you do it a few times you will have it for life.
