Im finally starting work in my '85 gs which i got off ebay for $137.85 $15 worth of fluids and fresh gasloine, and my 12a fired up and the car drove out of the garage on its own.

My carb tho spews lots of excess gasoline into the motor making for an extremely rich mixture, what were common problems with the carb's on these cars? The car flooded when we first tried to fire it up. The exhaust smokes on cold start up, but the smoke goes away when it warms for like 3 minutes. the exhaust also smells real bad of unburned gas, from a real rich mixture. Anyway, as far as the carb is concerned, I'm probobly going to upgrade to a holley with an intake for a ported motor.

I'd also be willing to bet that my air control valve diaphram is shot with old age.

When i was reving the engine, it didn't seem happy to rev above 5,000 rpm. it would go to the red line, but it was like it had no motivation to cligm higher. Then spontaneously, i gased it and it flew up to 7000 rpm no problem. My guess is that mabe the cats were clogged (the only exhaust is the manifold, and 2 cats lettin out under the car) or that mabe i was cleaning out a large amount carbon build up in the engine.

The car has 112,000 miles on it and i can only assume that its the original engine, i really don't kno much about the car. It is still a little less motivated to rev to 7,000 after 6,000. Is this normal? and what are signs that my cats are clogged and what could i do about that? What could i do about carbon build up...and what else could be up with this engine?

thanks

I'd run a compression test just to see where you are at, as far as the carb you can get a rebuild kit and rebuild it yourself fairly easily, I would recommend picking up a haynes or something like that.

Check the fuel filter if you havn't already. They only cost about $3 and they are pretty asy to change. The filter is on the driver's side, under the car, near the rear axle. The cats could be the problem as well, but usually when they clog, it effects the engine under load mostly (like getting on to the freeway).

also if its loading up and hesitant check the carb, make sure all the linkange is working and that the secondarys are opening properly. just get yourself some carp cleaner and spray out the the throat and and all linkages. worth a shot anyway.......
