This question is aimed at those RX7 owners in the Peoples Republic of California..

.

I am going to rebuild the engine in my 82 RX7 in the near future, and I was thinking on a street port or maybe a supercharger. Will these items affect my getting the car smogged? What is the limit I can do to the engine before the smog ***** throw up the red flag? I wanted to ask before I go ahead and buy all the parts just to find out that the car will be rejected when the time comes to get it registered.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

you need to keep the air pump and acv, or some way to get air into the exhaust ports, a main cat, and most likely the stock ports. the fd's dont pass smog with a street port, however the 12a is adjustable for timing and fuel so its maybe doable

It's like between a rock and a hard place, you want more power and have the money to buy it, but living here in Ca. has a very strict smog law. Depending where you go ( smog station) and the tech, with a header it will NOT pass the visual part of the test. I had a hard time

with the smog test myself with my GS (12a) and it's ALL stock, for a reason !! that reason being ******* around with performance parts on the engine. The ONLY performance part installed on the GS is a bonez

hi-flow cat. anyway,,, registration comes up and says ' test only'

ADVICE,,,,never go to a test only !! go to a repair/gross smog station.

the reason being, the test only tech can not tell you what to do if the car does not pass. he's bound by law. So go to a repair/gross smog

station,,,trust me, it's way better. My GS failed ( and it's all stock )

so the money i spent on the test only went up in smoke. with the nikki carb. the float(s) don't hold adjustment very long and the GS had to hi of hydro-carbons. So the secret of the hydro deal is adjust the float(s) yourself. A street ported engine will not pass, an engine with a supercharger will not pass. the only thing that pass's (barely)

is a stock engine.

A supercharger would surely fail the visual inspection.

Headers will be overlooked some places and probably caught other places

You will need the air pump and stock emissions control stuff, and a functioning main cat with air inlet for the split air pipe.

The last time I smogged my '82 it barely passed (with stock ports), but you might be able to make a street port pass with proper adjustments.

it doesnt need the split air for smog. mine passed with flying colors, you need to make the acv work
