the snow has been brutal here in OH. today I was driving along and heard something dragging. I looked under my car and saw this piece has broke away from my catalytic converter. I unhooked it up by my engine and the car went dead. Well I capped off the rubber hose and put it back on. The car idled fine. Other than a small hole in the converter, what does this piece do and should I fix the piece or leave it capped off?

I would say it shoulden't make a difference if you left it open because the air valve just pumps air out into that pipe. The worst that will happen is you'll burn down your cat.
