I used the stock pump on my 48 IDA's for quite awhile with no problems. When the stocker went out, I put on the Holley Blue w/reg. If I remember right, I think it the reg was set around 3.5 lbs.(Not real sure though)

I have my side draft set to 3psi. If you are using a dead head regulator, you need to set the pressure while the engine is running.

I heard that pump is supposed to be loud and sound similar to a garbage disposal.

Yeah, it was loud. Definately wouldn't wonder if it was running or not.
