Lets say I've got a T2 engine and tranny, etc, in my FB and I want to add a boost guage, fuel pressure guage, water temp guage, oil temp guage and monster tach with shift light, and maybe oxygen sensor, do I use mechanical ones or electrical ones?? Or does it depend on the type of guage itself ? (as in an oxygen sensor has to be electrical cos mechanical ones don't exist).
Anyone fitted any of these types of guages?? (I'm looking at you directfreak https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub... ) :stickpoke: TIA :bigthumg: |
I'll be running electrical on the 83.These cars came with electrical guages so I might as well add more.I'm going to mount a Volts and Air/Fuel guage in the A-pillar.I just need to install my 5" monster tach and shift light this weekend.Once I get the T2 project started I'll be running a shitload of electrical guages to make sure nothing blows up on it. :bigthumg: I still need to figure what parts of the main harness I need to keep off the T2 main harness that has the ECU connector on it.That harness is like 7 feet long in my basement.
|
So the 83 instrument cluster will hook up to the T2 engine and tranny and still give the correct readings? Or will they need to be recalibrated?

mike
Hey mike,How much of that main harness do I need?I have it all the way from the battery cables to the dash.I want to remove as much of it as I can for a easier install when I put it into a FB body.Theres also this metal box on the engine harnnes attached to the engine I never saw before is this a critical part of the ignition? The coils are run off the harness before the ECU?Do I just wire the coils to the stock first gen coil spots?I know they have built in ignitors.Damn chris32472 never updated that site on the wiring. Luis |

mike
Hey mike,How much of the main harness do I keep? How do I wire it to a FB cluster?I know the guages are run off the oil pan sensors and the alternator is run off the stock wiring as well but what about the coils?I see the plugs for them on the harness but that harness is from the ECU to the dash to every other part of the car including the rear hatch and front horns.Damn chris32472 never updated his site so I am clueless on this main harness I have. Also theres this stupid metal box with a connection on it and is part of the engine harnees.IS it nesscessary?I never saw this thing before. The driveline is 88 T2.Thanks ~Luis |
I have electrical gauges in mine, except the boost gauge. I put the boost and a/f meter on the A-pillar, the digital volt and water temp under the stereo. Still need to pick up oil pressure and fuel pressure gauges. Gotta decide exactly where to mount them.

They do leak every once in a while too. This pic is from a Series II, and it might be a good layout for you. |

Another View. (Note the larger Boost Gauge in the A/C vent)

My layout:
"A" Pillar: Boost Fuel Pressure On Steering Column: J & S Knock Sensor (Also Rich/Lean) Shift Light On Center Console: Rich/Lean - Where factory Clock was Under Stereo: Oil Pressure EGT - Exhaust Temp Water Temp In the Glove-box: Wideband O2 Sensor |
Will you use the stock gauges, or aftermarket?
The way I see it , is, use the dash gauges with the original wiring harness and senders for the car. Nice and stock. Add the Boost and A/F as necessary to enhance the info you need when you drive. And DON'T forget the Oil level I D 10 T light! Then, under the hood, I am going to run a full mechanical set for tuning purposes. Minus the boost and tach. my thoughts.... https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/blink.png |

the 83 cluster will work fine. i like electrical guages except for the boost guage, then i like mechanical. with mechanical guages you have to plum oil or coolant into the car, and that doesnt exactly seem like fun
mike ~Luis
the cool thing about the s4 is that the ecu doesnt freak about anything, so you can wire up the stuff you want and ignore the rest. all the guages function the same so you just need to find the sender wires and hook 'em up mike |
Sweet. You guys more than answered my questions, thanks. I've seen a couple of cars with the boost guage in the air duct now, seems like the thing to do. I'll most likely be running autometer guages, they seem to have a HUGE range and also seem good quality.
That is a pimp interior. I wanted to get a-pillar guage mounts, but I need right-hand drive ones and I haven't had any luck finding them here in Australia. |
Check the JAPANESE sites, they're all RHD. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png

where did u get the "A" pillar pod thing from??
It's an Autometer 2nd Gen one. It fits almost perfect from the factory. 2 Minutes with a heat Gun, and it did fit perfectly. Thats a pimp interior you have. That panel under the steering wheel gives a sleeper effect when it hangs like that. Damn. Cold. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...>/rolleyes.gif I wasn't finished with the wiring at the time of that pic. |

Thanks ~Luis |
One more thing......do I wire the coils to the FC's ECU setup or just wire them to the FBs wiring for the coils?
Thanks ~Luis BTW: I know this must be annoying for you but I need this info so I can share it with others like drifter when his time comes. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png |

I got the white inserts for the guage instrument cluster a couple of weeks back, so I'll probably go with some white guages to match. I'm thinking autometer?? They seem like a popular brand and I can get them from everywhere. Is there any other good brands for guages you know of?
|
i like my greddy's they are decent and easy to read
mike |
I like the guages Veilside sells.Damn those are nice......and pricy. https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

What about defi guages, has anyone heard of them? They look pretty :bling bling: http://www.defi-shop.com/
|
Yup.Vosko just got some for his FD.They are really nice as well.I've seen some for sale on the parts trader.I also saw some HKS ones there too.I wonder how good the HKS ones are? https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/dry.png

Might have to do some research. I wanna find out how much those defi ones are, they look awesome.

Does anyone know where to get a daul gauge Pod so it can be mounted on the driverside Pillar. I ordered one from Summit and it was not even close, another $30 bucks later and S&H handling both ways.
All I want is to have my Mechanical Oil and Oil Temp guages where I can see them and not mounted on the RB under filter adapter. Another option is to remove the Clock on the console and the Oil Pressure Guage will fit perfectly. But that still leaves the Oil Temp Gauge. Any Ideas. 84 GSL Dash. steve |
yeah the 84 is tough, how about in the ashtray?

That's how I have mine set up. |
I need some defis
