I was thinking of going to the front cover but now I thing the best thing is to tap the oil pan for the return line for a better gravity setup.Any ideas?

No. The Oil Pan will leak, and the return will be lower than the oil level (not good).
Tap Any 84/85 Front Cover. It already has the dimple for the factory Turbo Oil Return. A -10AN fitting fits perfectly. |

Yup front cover, if you made the oil go into the pan you would be creating backpressure on the turbo drain.

That's just becuuse it's a "Logical" place on most Piston cars. They just didn't know any better at the time when they did it to the Rotary.
