First off, Welcome to nopistons https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683329.gif

Secondly, this topic comes up consistantly as a lot of us are in various stages of this same project. It won't hurt to do a search, but more inportantly check out all the links pinned at the top of the 1st gen forum.

For starters...

You'll need a FB 13b GSL-SE oil pan and front engine cover for the t2 engine. This way the engine will fit right in. The front cover will need to be tapped for the turbo return line.

The T2 transmission is an inch too long for your centre console, so you'll have to source a shift housing and shift rod from a FB gearbox to make it fit.

You'll need your tailshaft custom made to make up for the length difference.

Thats for starters, digest that and have a pretty long think about how much time, money, and knowledge you have to attempt a turbo engine swap. Not trying to put you off in any sense, just pre-warning you to some of the associated heartache.

Theres also diff/suspensino upgrades, wiring, engine management system, etc,etc

Drifter covered most of it. The easiest way that I found was to buy a complete Turbo car. That way you have just about everything that you need to do the conversion. You'll need the wiring harness and ecu out of the Turbo. You'll also need another fuel pump, one to handle fuel injection. Custom driveshaft and quite a bit of fabrication. The biggest thing is that it can get quite costly to do. If you can't do most of the work yourself or have a hook-up, the cost will add up fast.

It's definately not a quick job, but I think it's worth it. Turbo 1st gens are ALOT of fun.https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/smile.png

Ya, and you can't beat that power-to-weight ratio either.

RotaryXSevn 11-30-2003 12:39 AM

these past few weeks (even before i posted this) i've been talkin to acouple of friends and they said that they'd be more then happy to help out with the turbo swap, and following this my friend justin said that he'd give/sell (i insisted that i'd buy) his extra turbo 2 harness off his 88 t2 motor and i'm getting a turbo 2 motor and trans for 500, but its a 87 or 86 t2 motor so i dont know if it'll work but. i checked the motor out and it seems pretty good, not only to me but close shop teacher of mine also. so all i need now is parts to buy and the fabrications to do. money is somewhat of an issue to me but in the end, it seems it'd be well worth the wait.

if anyone could be of even more great help that you guys have already done for me, please show me or even if thats too much help me find a link to show a t2 swap. thanks guys for your help and no offense takin drifter, the honest truth is better then a lie.

thanks everyone for your help and i'm doin my research on this project still, and if anyone has anything that they ran into that gave them a major problem during this swap, could you please let me know so i know what to expect? thanks if you can and if you couldnt, its no problem, still much love to ya.

hey guys i was at this site and this guy put what you would need inorder for a t2 swap in a fb and he put in his list,"Rear Dif:

81-83 GSL. NOT SE. Limited Slip Dif. W/disc brakes, or if you dont

want to change the whole rear-end you can swap just the Dif. This

swap will retain the stock 4x110mm bolt patern.

If you choose the complete swap don't forget the E-brake cables."

i was told by a couple of guys that i have to modify my tailshaft. well what do i have to modify specificly? and is this true that i can use this rear-end, because i already have this rear-end.

Montrealer 11-30-2003 09:28 PM

ok if you already have the harness and the complete engine of the S4, you are now missing TII coils, the S4 TII Air flow meter, boost sensor (located near passenger side strut tower of a S4 TII), knock control unit (metal box on the passenger kick panel or a S4 TII) the atmospheric pressure sensor located near the knock sensor, that is if all this did not come with the harness.

On top of that you will need the other stuff previously stated above...

1st gen front cover,

Racingbeat 12a-13b engine mounb braket (or modify stock one)

high pressure fuel pump (for fuel injected cars)

and a custom exhaust.

Thats the basics you need to do the swap, after that, if you decide to change the transmission, a little more custom work is required.

You need to modify its length, because the T2 tranny is a different size. Also you may decide to get servicable u-joints on it too.

RotaryXSevn 12-01-2003 06:28 AM

i know i have to modify it but, do i have to make it shorter or get one longer?

yeah thats what i'm gonna do, i'm gonna get the turbo 2 rad and run that with a black magic fan or fal. dont know how many cfms though, i think 2000 will be more then enough. ohh and does anyone know if (but i some-what doubt it) the turbo 2 hood would fit on an fb? if not then i guess i'll make my own vented hood.

A turbo 2 hood does not work on a FB you can get the that scoop from CP Racing tho.Second off if you plan to run a FC rad your going to have the fun of more custom mounts.I'm running a SE rad with my T2 motor.

RotaryXSevn 12-03-2003 03:36 PM

sounds like more fun to me https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...#>/biggrin.png haha. i'll prob put the SE rad in then, but if its not that hard i'll put the T2 one in.

setzep 12-03-2003 09:33 PM

keep the 12a rad, you don't need to put in a T2 radiator.

NO such thing as a 86 T2 you might want to look for a mid to late 87 clip. The early 87 T2 was low impedance and the later 87 was high impedance injection.

RotaryXSevn 12-04-2003 08:22 AM

i see.......it seems that i'll go with the early 87 t2 then. ohh and racer x, very nice FBs. especially the turbo 2 one https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/bigok.gif https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683894.gif
