i heard someone say to not use a normal timing gun??????? is this true for a rotary?? i have been using my normal gun on leading # 1 plug correct?

 

Never heard of a rotary specific timing gun, wouldn't really make sense, all a timing tells you is when the #1 spark plus is firing, that shouldn't change on a rotary.

 

You can use a normal gun, check out www.yawpower.com. He tells how to mark the front pully so that you can rev over 4000 and set the total advance instead of doing it at idle. Once you get your leading set then focus on the trailing.

 

I wouldn't use an adjustable one on a rotary. I'd use a cheapo and rev the engine to 4k.



By the way, if you have a stock pulley, all the Paul Yaw stuff is unnecessary. Infact, using masking tape can cause serious errors if it stretches. Besides, the pulley is 360mm circumference. That means 1° = 1mm. Just measure with a metric cloth tape measure and it'll be plenty accurate.

mazda did have a neat timing light back in the day, its battery powered, so theres only 1 wire for the pickup signal

 

Put your ear realy close to the backside of the motor. Listen very carefully while turning the dizzy........you will notice when you get to far one way or the other the motor sounds alot different. Now, slowly turn and listen even more carefully. Just as soon as you get to where it smooths out stop. Wait for a moment to make sure you don't have to tap it a hair, then lock it down. The ear never lies. This actually takes some time to learn but you will never have to worry about the light when you know the sound.

Are you dead serious? Its a rotary not some old 318 Dodge motor! Use a timing light and do it right.
